Learning Objectives

Forms of Dance:

  1. Traditional/Folk Dance

 

  1. Dances from specific cultures
  2. Examples: Bata (Yoruba), Ekombi (Efik), Atilogwu (Igbo)
  1. Contemporary Dance 
    1. Modern dance styles
    2. Combines different techniques
  2. Ballet 
    1. Classical dance form
    2. Requires special training and positions
  3. Social Dance 
    1. Dances for social gatherings
    2. Examples: Waltz, Salsa, Makossa
  4. Religious/Ceremonial Dance 
    1. Dances for worship or ceremonies
    2. Used in festivals and rituals

Notable Nigerian Dancers:

  • Qudus Onikeku – Contemporary dancer and choreographer
  • Kaffy (Kafayat Oluwatoyin) – Renowned dancer and choreographer

  • Peter Badejo – Traditional and contemporary dance expert

Basic Dance Elements:

  • Rhythm – Moving to the beat
  • Space – Using the area around you
  • Energy – How strong or gentle movements are
  • Body – Using different parts of your body
