Introduction

Music is written on special lines called a staff or stave. Just like we write words on lines in our notebooks, musicians write music notes on these special music lines. Today we will learn how to draw these lines and the special symbols that go with them.

Main Content

The Musical Staff

The musical staff is made of five straight lines that run across the page. These lines are evenly spaced, and we also count the spaces between the lines. We write music notes on these lines and in the spaces. When we draw a staff, we use a ruler to make sure all five lines are straight and the same distance apart.

The Grand Staff

The grand staff is made when we put two staffs together. The top staff is for higher sounds, and the bottom staff is for lower sounds. There is a small space between the two staffs. Piano music is often written on the grand staff because pianos can play both high and low notes at the same time.

The Clefs

Clefs are special symbols that we put at the beginning of each staff. The treble clef looks like a fancy letter G and goes on the top staff. It tells us that we will read higher notes. The bass clef looks like a backwards C with two dots and goes on the bottom staff. It tells us that we will read lower notes. These clefs help musicians know which notes to play or sing.

Class Exercises

Exercise 1: Practice drawing a staff. Use a ruler to draw five straight, parallel lines on your paper. Make sure the spaces between the lines are equal.

Exercise 2: Draw the grand staff. Draw one staff at the top of your paper and another staff below it, leaving a small space between them.

Exercise 3: Copy the treble clef. Look at how the teacher draws the treble clef and practice drawing it several times. Start from the bottom and curve it around like a snail shell.

Exercise 4: Practice the bass clef. Draw the bass clef by making a curve like the letter C, then add two dots on the right side. Practice this several times.

Exercise 5: Complete staff drawing. Draw a grand staff and add the correct clef to each staff. Put the treble clef on the top staff and the bass clef on the bottom staff.

Evaluation

Pupils will draw a complete grand staff with both treble and bass clefs. The teacher will check if the lines are straight and evenly spaced, and if the clefs are drawn correctly.

Assignment

Practice drawing the musical staff and both clefs at home. Draw at least three grand staffs with clefs in your music notebook. Make sure your lines are neat and straight using a ruler.
