What is Rhythm?

 Rhythm is the pattern of beats in music. It is the timing of sounds and silences that creates the “heartbeat” of music.
The Nigerian National Anthem Rhythm: “Arise, O compatriots” – has a steady 4/4 time signature
- Strong beats on counts 1 and 3
- Moderate tempo (not too fast, not too slow)
Types of Rhythm:
- Simple Rhythm – Even beats (1-2-3-4)
- Compound Rhythm – Grouped beats (1-2-3, 1-2-3)
- Syncopated Rhythm – Off-beat emphasis
- Traditional Nigerian Rhythms – Like talking drum patterns
Common Rhythm Patterns:
- March rhythm: Strong-weak-strong-weak
- Waltz rhythm: Strong-weak-weak
- Traditional rhythm: Various African patterns
