What is Rhythm?

Rhythm is the pattern of beats in music. It is the timing of sounds and silences that creates the “heartbeat” of music.

The Nigerian National Anthem Rhythm: “Arise, O compatriots” – has a steady 4/4 time signature

  • Strong beats on counts 1 and 3
  • Moderate tempo (not too fast, not too slow)

Types of Rhythm:

  1. Simple Rhythm – Even beats (1-2-3-4)
  2. Compound Rhythm – Grouped beats (1-2-3, 1-2-3)
  3. Syncopated Rhythm – Off-beat emphasis
