Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
- Define living things and non-living things
- Analyze the characteristics of living things
- Classify items in their environment as living or non-living things
Content
What are Living Things? Living things are organisms that have life and can perform certain activities. Examples include humans, animals, plants, fungi, and bacteria.
What are Non-Living Things? Non-living things are objects that do not have life and cannot perform life activities on their own. Examples include stones, chairs, water, air, and books.

Characteristics of Living Things
- Movement – Living things can move from one place to another or move parts of their body
- Respiration – They breathe to obtain energy from food
- Nutrition – They feed to get energy and grow
- Growth – They increase in size and develop
- Excretion – They remove waste products from their body
- Reproduction – They produce young ones like themselves
- Sensitivity – They respond to changes in their environment (light, heat, sound, etc.)
Classification Exercise
- Living Things: Dog, grass, butterfly, teacher, mango tree
- Non-Living Things: Desk, pencil, stone, water, air
Activities
- Nature walk to identify living and non-living things
- Create a chart showing living vs non-living things
- Group discussion on characteristics
