Topic: Living and Non-living Things

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  • Define living things and non-living things
  • Analyze the characteristics of living things
  • Classify items in their environment as living or non-living things

Content

What are Living Things? Living things are organisms that have life and can perform certain activities. Examples include humans, animals, plants, fungi, and bacteria.

What are Non-Living Things? Non-living things are objects that do not have life and cannot perform life activities on their own. Examples include stones, chairs, water, air, and books.

Characteristics of Living Things

  1. Movement – Living things can move from one place to another or move parts of their body
  2. Respiration – They breathe to obtain energy from food
  3. Nutrition – They feed to get energy and grow
  4. Growth – They increase in size and develop
  5. Excretion – They remove waste products from their body
  6. Reproduction – They produce young ones like themselves
  7. Sensitivity – They respond to changes in their environment (light, heat, sound, etc.)

Classification Exercise

  • Living Things: Dog, grass, butterfly, teacher, mango tree
  • Non-Living Things: Desk, pencil, stone, water, air

Activities

  • Nature walk to identify living and non-living things
  • Create a chart showing living vs non-living things
  • Group discussion on characteristics
