What is Basketball? Basketball is a team sport where two teams of five players each try to score points by throwing a ball through the opponent’s basket (hoop).

Facilities in Basketball (Fixed structures)

  1. Basketball Court
  • Rectangular playing area
  • Size: 28m × 15m (standard)
  • Made of wood (indoor) or concrete (outdoor)
  1. Baskets/Hoops
  • Two hoops, one at each end
  • Height: 3.05 meters (10 feet)
  • Net attached to rim
  1. Backboard
  • Board behind the basket
  • Usually rectangular
  • Helps ball go into basket
  1. Free Throw Line
  • Line 4.57 meters from backboard
  • Where free throws are taken
  1. Three-Point Line
  • Arc around basket
  • Shots from beyond earn 3 points
  1. Center Circle
  • Circle in middle of court
  • Where game starts (tip-off)
  1. Key/Paint Area
  • Rectangular area under basket
  • Restricted zone

Equipment in Basketball (Movable items)

  1. Basketball
  • Inflated ball, usually orange
  • Size varies by age/gender
  • Made of leather or rubber
  1. Uniforms
  • Jersey (with number)
  • Shorts
  • Team colors
  1. Basketball Shoes
  • High-top shoes for ankle support
  • Non-marking rubber soles
  • Good grip
  1. Whistle

Basic Skills in Basketball

  1. Dribbling
  • Bouncing ball with one hand
  • Keep ball low
  • Use fingertips, not palm
  • Look up, not at ball
  • Practice with both hands
  1. Passing
  • Chest Pass: Push ball from chest with both hands
  • Bounce Pass: Bounce ball to teammate
  • Overhead Pass: Throw from above head
  1. Shooting
  • Lay-up: Close-range shot while running
  • Jump Shot: Shoot while jumping
  • Free Throw: Unguarded shot from free throw line
  • Three-Pointer: Shot from beyond arc
  1. Catching
  • Hands ready to receive ball
  • Watch ball into hands
  • Fingers spread
  • Secure the ball
  1. Pivoting
  • Keep one foot planted (pivot foot)
  • Turn body in different directions
  • Protects ball from opponent
  1. Rebounding
  • Catching ball after missed shot
  • Jump high with arms extended
  • Secure ball firmly
  1. Defense
  • Stay between opponent and basket
  • Hands up
  • Move feet quickly
  • Block shots without fouling

Basic Rules

  • 5 players per team on court
  • Score by putting ball through hoop
  • 2 points for normal shot, 3 for long shot, 1 for free throw
  • Cannot run with ball without dribbling (traveling)
  • Cannot hold ball more than 5 seconds when closely guarded
  • Game divided into quarters

Safety Measures in Basketball

Before Playing:

  1. Warm up and stretch properly
  2. Wear appropriate basketball shoes
  3. Remove jewelry and watches
  4. Check court for hazards (wet spots, debris)
  5. Inspect ball for proper inflation
  6. Wear protective gear if needed (knee pads, mouthguard)

During Play:

  1. Stay hydrated – drink water regularly
  2. Follow rules and referee decisions
  3. Communicate with teammates
  4. Avoid aggressive play and fouling
  5. Be aware of surroundings
  6. Control your movements
  7. Don’t push or shove opponents

After Playing:

  1. Cool down with light exercises
  2. Stretch to prevent muscle soreness
  3. Report any injuries immediately
  4. Treat minor injuries (ice, rest)

General Safety:

  • Have first aid kit available
  • Play on safe, clean courts
  • Respect other players
  • Don’t play when injured
  • Get proper coaching and training
