1. TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE

What is traditional marriage? Traditional marriage is done according to the customs and traditions of the people.

Features of traditional marriage:

• Follows the culture of the people
• Both families are heavily involved
• Uses traditional clothes and ceremonies
• Performed by family elders
• Includes traditional music and dance
• May involve payment of bride price

What happens in traditional marriage:

• Families meet to discuss the marriage
• Traditional prayers and blessings are said
• Bride and groom wear traditional clothes
• Traditional food is served
• Elders perform the ceremony
• Gifts are exchanged between families

Examples in Nigeria:

• Yoruba traditional marriage: Uses aso-oke clothing, involves alaga (ceremony coordinator)
• Igbo traditional marriage: Includes wine carrying ceremony, traditional attire
• Hausa traditional marriage: Follows Islamic-influenced traditions

Example: Kemi and Tolu had a Yoruba traditional wedding. Kemi wore beautiful aso-oke, and Tolu wore agbada. Their families performed traditional rites and blessed their union.

Features of church wedding:

What happens in church wedding:

2. ISLAMIC MARRIAGE (Nikah)

What is Islamic marriage? Marriage is performed according to Islamic laws and customs.

Features of Islamic marriage:

• Takes place in mosque or home
• Imam (Islamic leader) conducts ceremony
• Recitation of Quran verses
• Islamic prayers (duas)
• Witnesses must be present
• Marriage contract (Nikah) is signed

What happens in Islamic marriage:

• Imam recites from the Quran
• Groom and bride accept the marriage contract
• Mahr (dowry) is agreed upon
• Islamic prayers are said
• Feast (Walima) may follow
• Family and friends celebrate

What is court marriage? Marriage performed by government officials in a court or registry office.

Features of court marriage:

• Takes place in government registry office
• Marriage registrar conducts ceremony
• Legal documents are signed
• Witnesses are required
• Marriage certificate is issued
• Simple and quick ceremony

What happens in court marriage:

• Couple arrives at registry office
• Registrar reads marriage laws
• Couple signs marriage register
• Witnesses sign as well
• Marriage certificate is given
• Simple reception may follow

Why people choose court marriage:

• It is legal and recognized by law
• It is simple and fast
• It costs less money
• No religious requirements
• Gives legal protection
