DEFINITION OF PAPIER MACHEĀ

Papier mache can be defined as:
- Wet paper pounded and mixed with adhesive to form a moldable material
- A sculpting technique using paper and paste
- French term meaning “chewed paper”
- A method of creating objects using layers of paper and glue
ORIGIN AND HISTORY
- Originated in China during Han Dynasty (202 BC – 220 AD)
- Spread along Silk Road to Middle East and Europe
- Popular in Europe from 1725 as alternative to carved wood
- Used for decorative objects and masks
- Still widely used in festivals and art education

METHODS OF PAPIER MACHE
STRIP METHOD
- Tear paper into strips

PULP METHOD
- Soak paper until soft
- Blend into pulp
- Mix with paste
- Mold directly into shape
- Good for detailed work
- Creates solid forms

- Apply paste with brush
- Smooth over form

PREPARING PAPIER MACHE PASTE
FLOUR PASTE RECIPEĀ
Ingredients:
- 1 part flour
- 1 part water
- Pinch of salt (prevents mold)
Instructions:
- Mix flour and water until smooth
- Heat while stirring (optional)
- Add salt
- Cool before using
- Store covered in refrigerator
GLUE PASTE RECIPEĀ
Ingredients:
- 3 parts white glue
- 1 part water
Instructions:
- Mix glue and water
- Stir until well combined
- Use immediately
- Provides stronger bond

CREATE ARMATURE
