Topic: The Senses – Hearing

Learning Objectives: By the end of this lesson, pupils should be able to:
- Identify the ear as the organ for receiving sounds
- Listen and identify sounds of different animals and objects in the environment
- differentiate between sounds of objects, animals and humans
- Appraise the importance of the sense of sound in their interaction with their environment
Lesson Content:
The Sense of Hearing: Hearing is our ability to detect sounds around us using our ears. It helps us know what is happening even when we cannot see.
The Ear – Organ of Sound:
- Ears are the organs we use for hearing
- We have two ears, one on each side of our head
- Ears can hear sounds from all directions
- Ears work even when we are sleeping
Parts of the Ear:
- Outer ear: The part we can see
- Ear canal: The opening that leads inside
- Eardrum: Vibrates when sound hits it
- Inner ear: Deep inside where hearing happens
Different Sounds We Hear:
Animal Sounds:
- Dog: Woof, woof or bark
- Cat: Meow, purr
- Cow: Moo

- Chicken: Cock-a-doodle-doo (rooster), cluck (hen)
- Lion: Roar

- Frog: Croak
- Bird: Chirp, tweet
Human Sounds:
- Talking: People speaking words
- Singing: Making musical sounds with voice
- Crying: When sad or hurt
- Laughing: When happy or amused
- Shouting: Speaking very loudly
- Whispering: Speaking very quietly
Object Sounds:
- Car: Vroom, honk
- Bell: Ring, ding
- Door: Bang, creak, slam
- Water: Splash, drip, flow
- Clock: Tick, tock
- Phone: Ring, beep
Importance of Hearing:
- Warns us of danger (car horn, fire alarm)
- Helps us communicate with others
- Lets us enjoy music and songs
- Helps us learn in school when teacher speaks
- Tells us what’s happening around us
- Helps us know when someone calls our name
Loud and Soft Sounds:
- Loud sounds: Thunder, airplane, shouting
- Soft sounds: Whisper, rain drops, cat purring
Taking Care of Our Ears:
- Don’t put sharp objects in ears
- Keep ears clean and dry
- Avoid very loud sounds
- Don’t shout directly into someone’s ear
- Tell adults if ears hurt or feel blocked
