Topic: Introduction of Wäw and Yäw as Elongation Letters
What We Will Learn Today
- How Wäw (و) makes the “ū” sound longer
- How Yäw (ي) makes the “ī” sound longer
- When these letters work as vowel elongation
- Practice reading words with long vowels
What is Vowel Elongation?
Elongation means making a sound longer.
Instead of short sounds like:
- “i” (quick sound)
- “u” (quick sound)
We make long sounds like:
- “ī” (longer “i” sound)
- “ū” (longer “u” sound)
Wäw (و) for Long “ū” Sound
How it Works:
- When a letter has Dhammah (ُ) followed by Wäw (و)
- The “u” sound becomes long “ū”
- We write it as: letter + ُو
Examples:
- بُو = “bū” (long u sound)
- سُوق = “sūq” (market)
- نُور = “nūr” (light)
- فُول = “fūl” (beans)
How to Read:
- See the Dhammah (ُ) first
- Then see the Wäw (و) after it
- Make a long “ū” sound
Yäw (ي) for Long “ī” Sound
How it Works:
- When a letter has Kasrah (ِ) followed by Yäw (ي)
- The “i” sound becomes long “ī”
- We write it as: letter + ِي
Examples:
- بِي = “bī” (long i sound)
- فِيل = “fīl” (elephant)
- كِيس = “kīs” (bag)
- بِير = “bīr” (well)
How to Read:
- See the Kasrah (ِ) first
- Then see the Yäw (ي) after it
- Make a long “ī” sound
Easy Rules to Remember
For Long “ū” Sound:
- Look for: Dhammah (ُ) + Wäw (و)
- Sound: Hold the “u” sound longer
- Symbol: ُو
For Long “ī” Sound:
- Look for: Kasrah (ِ) + Yäw (ي)
- Sound: Hold the “i” sound longer
- Symbol: ِي
Important: The Wäw and Yäw have no harakat when they elongate vowels!
What We Learned
- Wäw (و) after Dhammah (ُ) makes long “ū” sound
- Yäw (ي) after Kasrah (ِ) makes long “ī” sound
- These are called vowel elongation letters
- We hold the vowel sound longer when we see these combinations
EXERCISES
- Circle the long vowel combinations:
سُوق بَيت فِيل وَلَد نُور كِيس
- Write “ū” or “ī” for each combination:
- ُو = ____
- ِي = ____
- سُو = ____
- فِي = ____
- نُو = ____
- Match the word with its sound:
- فِيل → “fūl”
- سُوق → “fīl”
- فُول → “sūq”
- كِيس → “kīs”
- True or False:
- ُو makes a long “ū” sound. ( )
- ِي makes a short “i” sound. ( )
- Elongation letters have no harakat. ( )
- We hold vowel sounds longer in elongation. ( )
- Reading Practice: Read these words with long vowels:
- نُور (nūr) = light
- فِيل (fīl) = elephant
- سُوق (sūq) = market
- بِير (bīr) = well
- Complete the patterns:
- بُ + و = بُو (bū)
- سِ + ي = ____ (sī)
- رُ + و = ____ (rū)
- مِ + ي = ____ (mī)
Practice Tip: Hold your finger up and count “1-2” when you see elongation letters to make the sound longer!
