Topic: Hadith 15-16 An Nawawi

An-Nawawi’s 40 Hadith is a famous collection of sayings from Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). These hadith were chosen by Imam An-Nawawi because they contain important Islamic teachings. Today, we will learn about Hadith 15 and 16 from this collection.

What is a Hadith?

A hadith is a saying or action of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that was remembered and written down by his companions. Muslims follow these teachings alongside the Quran.

Hadith 15: Speak Good or Remain Silent

The Text of Hadith 15

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent. Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should be kind to his neighbor. Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should be generous to his guest.”

(Reported by Bukhari and Muslim)

Simple Explanation of Hadith 15

Part 1: Speak Good or Remain Silent

This part of the hadith teaches us to be careful with our words. If we have something good to say, we should say it. But if what we want to say might hurt someone or is not useful, we should stay quiet.

Examples of good speech:

– Saying kind words to others

– Speaking the truth

– Giving good advice

– Remembering Allah

– Teaching useful knowledge

Examples of speech we should avoid:

– Telling lies

– Backbiting (talking badly about someone when they are not there)

– Spreading rumors

– Using bad language

– Making fun of others

Part 2: Be Kind to Neighbors

The second part of the hadith teaches us to be good to our neighbors. A neighbor is anyone who lives near us. Being kind to neighbors creates a peaceful community.Ways to be kind to neighbors:

– Greeting them with a smile

– Helping them when they need help

– Not making loud noises that disturb them

– Sharing food with them

– Checking on them when they are sick

– Not causing them any harm

Part 3: Be Generous to Guests

The third part of the hadith teaches us to be generous to our guests. When someone visits our home, we should make them feel welcome and comfortable.

Ways to be generous to guests:

– Greeting them warmly

– Offering them food and drink

– Making them comfortable

– Spending time with them

– Speaking kindly to them

– Accompanying them to the door when they leave

Lessons from Hadith 15

  1. Our faith should show in our actions and words
  2. We are responsible for what we say
  3. Being silent is better than saying something bad
  4. Good relationships with neighbors are important in Islam
  5. Showing hospitality to guests is a sign of true faith

Hadith 16: Do Not Get Angry

The Text of Hadith 16

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a man said to the Prophet (peace be upon him):

“Give me advice.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Do not get angry.” The man repeated his request several times, and each time the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Do not get angry.”

(Reported by Bukhari)

Simple Explanation of Hadith 16

In this hadith, a man came to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) asking for simple advice that would help him in life. The Prophet could have told him many things, but he chose to say, “Do not get angry.” When the man asked again and again for more advice, the Prophet repeated the same words.

This shows how important it is to control our anger. Anger can make us do and say things that we will regret later.

Why Controlling Anger is Important:

– Anger can lead us to hurt others with words or actions

– Anger can damage relationships

– Anger can make us make bad decisions

– Anger can harm our health

– Anger can cause us to lose Allah’s rewards

How to Control Anger:

  1. Remember Allah and seek His help
  2. Change your position (if standing, sit down; if sitting, lie down)
  3. Make wudu (ritual washing) with cool water
  4. Say “I seek refuge in Allah from Satan”
  5. Walk away from the situation that is making you angry
  6. Take deep breaths and count to ten
  7. Think about the rewards for those who control their anger

Story about Controlling Anger

Once, a strong man said to the Prophet (peace be upon him), “I am a strong man and I don’t want anyone to beat me in strength.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The strong person is not the one who can wrestle others to the ground. The truly strong person is the one who can control himself when angry.”

Lessons from Hadith 16

  1. Controlling anger is a sign of strength, not weakness
  2. Repeated advice shows its importance
  3. Simple advice can have a big impact on our lives
  4. Our reactions to situations are in our control
  5. Preventing anger is better than dealing with its consequences

Connecting Hadith 15 and 16

Both hadith teach us about self-control:

– Hadith 15 teaches us to control our tongue

– Hadith 16 teaches us to control our emotions

When we are angry, we are more likely to say bad things. So by following the advice of Hadith 16 (not getting angry), we can better follow the advice of Hadith 15 (speaking good or remaining silent).

Practical Applications for Our Lives

  1. Think before you speak

   – Ask yourself: “Is what I’m about to say good, kind, and true?”

   – If not, it’s better to stay quiet

  1. Make a habit of checking on neighbors

   – Start with a simple greeting

   – Offer help when you can

   – Share food occasionally

  1. Welcome guests properly

   – Keep some snacks ready for unexpected guests

   – Make them feel comfortable and valued

  1. Practice anger management

   – Identify what makes you angry

   – Have a plan ready for when you feel anger coming

   – Remember the Prophet’s advice when you feel angry

  1. Teach these values to children

   – Help them understand the importance of good speech

   – Show them how to be kind to neighbors

   – Teach them to welcome guests

   – Help them learn to control their emotions
