Fara’id (Obligatory Acts) of Wudu
What is Fara’id?
- Fara’id means the required parts of wudu
- These must be done for wudu to be valid
- If any Fard is missed, wudu is not complete
- There are 4 main Fara’id of wudu
The Four Fara’id of Wudu
- Washing the Face
- From forehead to chin
- From ear to ear
- Includes rinsing the mouth and nose
- Must wash the whole face completely
- Washing the Arms
- Both arms up to the elbows
- Start from fingertips to elbows
- Include the elbows in washing
- Must wash completely with water
- Wiping the Head
- Wipe at least 1/4 of the head
- Use wet hands
- Can wipe the whole head or part of it
- This is called “Masah”
- Washing the Feet
- Both feet up to the ankles
- Include the ankles in washing
- Wash between the toes
- Make sure water reaches all parts
Important Notes about Fara’id
- All four must be done in order
- Water must flow on each part
- No long gaps between washing each part
- Each part must be washed completely
Sunnah (Traditional) Acts of Wudu
What are Sunnah Acts?
- Sunnah means recommended actions
- These are good to do but not required
- Following Sunnah brings extra reward
- Wudu is valid even without Sunnah acts
Main Sunnah Acts of Wudu
- Starting with Bismillah
- Say “Bismillahi’r-rahmani’r-raheem”
- Start with Allah’s name
- This brings blessing to the wudu
- Washing Hands First
- Wash hands up to wrists 3 times
- Clean the hands before starting
- Make sure hands are pure
- Using Miswak or Brushing Teeth
- Clean the teeth and mouth
- Use miswak (tooth stick) if available
- This makes the mouth clean and fresh
- Washing Each Part Three Times
- Wash face 3 times
- Wash arms 3 times each
- Wash feet 3 times each
- Three times is Sunnah, once is Fard
- Starting with the Right Side
- Wash right arm before left arm
- Wash right foot before left foot
- Right side first is always preferred
- Making Dua After Wudu
- Say special prayers after completing wudu
- Thank Allah for helping us become clean
- Ask Allah to accept our worship
Other Sunnah Acts
- Use moderate amount of water (don’t waste)
- Rub each part while washing
- Wash fingers and toes properly
- Face the Qiblah when possible
Five Ways of Correcting Mistakes in Ablution
Way 1: If You Miss a Fard Part
The Mistake:
- Forgot to wash face, arms, head, or feet completely
- Realized you missed one of the four required parts
How to Correct:
- Wash the missed part immediately
- Also wash all parts that come after the missed part
- Example: If you forgot to wipe head, wipe head then wash feet again
Way 2: If You Break the Order
The Mistake:
- Washed feet before wiping head
- Did the steps in wrong sequence
How to Correct:
- Go back to the part you should have done first
- Redo all the steps in correct order
- Example: If you washed feet first, start again with face
Way 3: If Water Didn’t Reach All Areas
The Mistake:
- Some part of face, arm, or foot didn’t get wet
- Water didn’t flow properly on the skin
How to Correct:
- Wash that specific area again
- Make sure water reaches every spot
- Check between fingers and toes
- Ensure water flows on the skin
Way 4: If There Was a Long Gap
The Mistake:
- Too much time passed between washing different parts
- The previous part dried before washing the next
How to Correct:
- Start the wudu completely over
- Do all parts again without long delays
- Keep the sequence flowing smoothly
Way 5: If You Used Impure Water
The Mistake:
- Used dirty or impure water for wudu
- Water was mixed with impure substances
How to Correct:
- Find clean, pure water
- Repeat the entire wudu with clean water
- Make sure the water is suitable for purification
General Tips for Avoiding Mistakes
Before Starting:
- Make sure you have clean water
- Check that you have enough time
- Remove anything that might block water (tight rings, etc.)
During Wudu:
- Focus on what you’re doing
- Don’t rush through the steps
- Make sure each part gets properly wet
After Wudu:
- Check if you missed anything
- If in doubt, it’s better to repeat
- Remember that Allah loves cleanliness
When to Redo Wudu Completely
- If you’re not sure you did it correctly
- If you missed multiple parts
- If you used impure water
- If there were long gaps between parts
When Partial Correction is Enough
- If you missed only one small area
- If you remember immediately what you missed
- If the mistake was minor and recent
