What is a Hero?

 A hero is a brave person who does great things to help their people and community. Heroes are remembered for their good deeds long after they die.

Heroes of Lagos State

1. Ogunfunminire

• Place of Birth: Ile-Ife (but came to settle in Lagos)

• Contributions:
  1. Led the Awori people to settle on Lagos Island
  2. Was a great hunter who discovered Lagos lagoon
  3. Started the first settlement on Lagos Island
  4. Became the first traditional ruler of Lagos
  5. Helped his people learn fishing and trading

2. Oba Kosoko

• Place of Birth: Lagos Island
• Time Period: 1800s (19th century)
• Contributions:
  1. Was a strong king who fought to protect Lagos from foreign control
  2. Tried to keep Lagos traditions alive
  3. Was brave in fighting against British takeover
  4. Stood up for his people’s rights
  5. Though he lost the fight, he showed great courage

3. John Augustus Abayomi Cole (Da Rocha)

• Place of Birth: Lagos (of Brazilian returnee family)
• Time Period: 1800s-1900s
• Contributions:
  1. Was one of the first educated a lawyer to help people
  2. Helped bring education to more people
  3. Built schools and supported learning

4. Candido Joao da Rocha

• Place of Birth: Brazil (came back to Lagos)
• Time Period: 1800s
• Contributions:
  1. Was a successful businessman
  2. Built beautiful houses in Lagos (Brazilian style)
  3. Helped develop Lagos economically
  4. Brought new building styles to Lagos
  5. Created jobs for many people

5. Tapa Zango

• Place of Birth: Northern Nigeria (came to Lagos)
• Time Period: 1800s
• Contributions:
  1. Was a successful trader
  2. Helped connect Lagos with northern Nigeria
  3. Brought goods from the north to Lagos
  4. Helped different ethnic groups work together
  5. Built trade networks
