What is a Heroine? A heroine is a brave woman who does great things to help her people and community. Heroines are remembered for their good deeds and courage, just like heroes.
Heroines of Lagos State
- Madam Efunroye Tinubu

- Place of Birth: Owu (near Abeokuta), but lived most of her life in Lagos
- Time Period: 1800s (lived from about 1805-1887)
- Contributions:
- Was a very successful trader and businesswoman
- Sold salt, tobacco, and other goods
- Helped many people get jobs in her businesses
- Fought against slavery (people being sold as slaves)
- Advised kings and chiefs on important matters
- Helped poor people and widows
- Stood up for women’s rights
- Has a square named after her in Lagos (Tinubu Square)
- Madam Pelewura

- Was a leader of market women
- Fought for traders’ rights
- Organized women to protest unfair taxes
- Helped market women get better treatment
- Showed that women could be strong leaders
