The Gift of the Holy Spirit
What is a Gift?
- A gift is something given freely to someone
- The person receiving it doesn’t have to pay for it
- It shows love and care from the giver
- We should be grateful for gifts we receive
The Holy Spirit as God’s Gift
A Free Gift from God:
- God gives the Holy Spirit to everyone who believes in Jesus
- We don’t have to earn this gift by being good
- We don’t have to pay money for it
- It’s given because God loves us
Bible verse: “Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit'” (Acts 2:38)
The Best Gift Ever:
- The Holy Spirit is the most precious gift God can give
- He is more valuable than money, toys, or anything else
- This gift lasts forever and never breaks
- No one can take this gift away from us
Who Receives This Gift?
All Believers:
- Anyone who believes in Jesus receives the Holy Spirit
- Children can receive this gift too
- It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor
- It doesn’t matter what country you come from
When We Receive the Gift:
- The Holy Spirit comes to live in us when we accept Jesus
- He comes into our hearts the moment we believe
- We become God’s children when we receive this gift
- Our bodies become the Holy Spirit’s temple
Bible verse: “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?” (1 Corinthians 3:16)
Why God Gives Us This Gift
Because He Loves Us:
- God wants to be close to us
- He desires to help us in our daily life
- The Holy Spirit is God’s way of being with us always
- This gift shows how much God cares for us
To Help Us Live as Christians:
- The Holy Spirit helps us obey God
- He gives us power to do what is right
- He helps us grow in our faith
- He makes us more like Jesus
To Connect Us with God:
- The Holy Spirit helps us pray
- He helps us understand the Bible
- He makes God’s love real in our hearts
- He assures us that we are God’s children
Bible verse: “The Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children” (Romans 8:15-16)
Things Jesus Promised the Holy Spirit Would Do for Us
Be Our Helper
- The Holy Spirit helps us when we have problems
- He gives us strength when we are weak
- He assists us in doing good things
- He is always available to help us
Bible verse: “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things” (John 14:26)
Teach Us All Things
Help Us Understand the Bible:
- The Holy Spirit explains God’s word to us
- He makes difficult Bible verses clear
- He helps us remember what we read
- He shows us how to apply Bible truths to our lives
Teach Us Right from Wrong:
- The Holy Spirit shows us what pleases God
- He warns us when we are about to sin
- He helps us make good choices
- He guides us in difficult decisions
Remind Us of Jesus’ Words:
- The Holy Spirit brings Jesus’ teachings to our minds
- He helps us remember Bible verses when we need them
- He recalls God’s promises when we are worried
- He keeps Jesus’ words fresh in our hearts
Guide Us into All Truth
- The Holy Spirit leads us to understand God’s truth
- He protects us from believing lies
- He helps us know what is really true
- He guides us away from false teachings
Bible verse: “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth” (John 16:13)
Give Us Power
Power to Live Like Jesus:
- The Holy Spirit gives us strength to be kind
- He helps us love people who are mean to us
- He gives us courage to do what is right
- He helps us resist temptation to sin
Power to Tell Others About Jesus:
- The Holy Spirit gives us words to say
- He helps us be brave when sharing our faith
- He gives us opportunities to witness
- He works in people’s hearts as we speak
Bible verse: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses” (Acts 1:8)
Comfort Us
When We Are Sad:
- The Holy Spirit comforts us when we cry
- He brings peace to our troubled hearts
- He reminds us that God loves us
- He gives us hope when things look bad
When We Are Afraid:
- The Holy Spirit takes away our fears
- He reminds us that God is with us
- He gives us courage to face difficulties
- He helps us trust God in scary situations
When We Are Lonely:
- The Holy Spirit is always with us
- He reminds us we are never alone
- He brings God’s presence into our lives
- He connects us with other believers
Pray for Us
When We Don’t Know What to Say:
- Sometimes we don’t know how to pray
- The Holy Spirit prays for us
- He knows what we really need
- He speaks to God on our behalf
Bible verse: “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us” (Romans 8:26)
Convict Us of Sin
Show Us When We Do Wrong:
- The Holy Spirit makes us feel bad when we sin
- He helps us recognize our mistakes
- He brings conviction to our hearts
- He leads us to confess and repent
Help Us Want to Change:
- The Holy Spirit creates desire for righteousness
- He helps us want to please God
- He gives us power to stop sinning
- He transforms our hearts and minds
The Fruits of the Holy Spirit
What are Fruits?
- Fruits are good things that grow on healthy trees
- You can tell what kind of tree it is by its fruit
- Good trees produce good fruit
- In our lives, good character qualities are like fruit
The Nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit
Bible verse: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23)
Love
What it means:
- Caring deeply for others
- Putting other people’s needs first
- Being kind even to people who hurt us
- Loving God with all our heart
How it shows:
- Helping someone in need
- Sharing our toys and food
- Forgiving people who say sorry
- Being patient with annoying people
Joy
What it means:
- Being happy deep inside
- Having gladness that doesn’t depend on circumstances
- Feeling good because God loves us
- Being cheerful even when things are hard
How it shows:
- Smiling and laughing appropriately
- Being thankful for God’s blessings
- Singing worship songs with happiness
- Encouraging others when they are sad
Peace
What it means:
- Being calm and not worried
- Having rest in our hearts
- Not fighting or arguing
- Trusting God to take care of us
How it shows:
- Staying calm during problems
- Not worrying about tomorrow
- Helping solve arguments peacefully
- Sleeping well because we trust God
Patience (Forbearance)
What it means:
- Waiting without complaining
- Not getting angry quickly
- Being understanding when others make mistakes
- Giving people time to change
How it shows:
- Waiting your turn without pushing
- Not getting mad when someone is slow
- Helping someone learn without getting frustrated
- Forgiving people who keep making the same mistakes
Kindness
What it means:
- Being gentle and caring toward others
- Wanting to help people feel better
- Using soft words instead of harsh ones
- Thinking of ways to bless others
How it shows:
- Helping carry heavy things for others
- Speaking nicely to everyone
- Comforting someone who is crying
- Including lonely children in games
Goodness
What it means:
- Doing what is right and moral
- Having a pure heart
- Wanting to please God in everything
- Being honest and truthful
How it shows:
- Telling the truth even when it’s hard
- Doing the right thing when no one is watching
- Standing up for what is right
- Helping people without expecting anything back
Faithfulness
What it means:
- Being reliable and trustworthy
- Keeping promises we make
- Staying loyal to friends and family
- Being dependable in big and small things
How it shows:
- Doing what you promised to do
- Being on time for appointments
- Keeping secrets when asked to
- Sticking with friends during hard times
Gentleness
What it means:
- Being tender and mild in manner
- Not being rough or harsh
- Treating others with care
- Using soft strength instead of force
How it shows:
- Speaking softly when someone is upset
- Being careful with other people’s things
- Helping younger children patiently
- Touching animals and plants carefully
Self-Control
What it means:
- Having power over our desires and actions
- Not doing everything we feel like doing
- Making good choices even when we want to do wrong
- Controlling our words, thoughts, and behavior
How it shows:
- Not eating too much candy
- Controlling your temper when angry
- Studying instead of only playing
- Not saying mean things when you’re upset
How the Fruits Grow
By Staying Close to Jesus:
- Reading the Bible regularly
- Praying every day
- Going to church and Sunday school
- Obeying God’s commands
By Letting the Holy Spirit Work:
- Asking the Holy Spirit to help us
- Not fighting against His leading
- Confessing sin when we do wrong
- Being willing to change and grow
Through Practice:
- Choosing to be loving when we don’t feel like it
- Practicing kindness even to difficult people
- Working on self-control in small things
- Growing stronger through daily choices
