Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
- Analyse new words to determine meaning
- Explain the meaning of each word given to them
- Identify synonyms of the new words
- Use the new words in their own sentences
- Dramatize the meaning of the new words
Introduction
This week we focus on words from our previous reading passages. Understanding these words deeply will help us become better readers and speakers.
Content Development
New Words from Previous Passages:
- ANALYZE (or ANALYSE)
- Meaning: To study something carefully to understand it better
- Simple meaning: To look at something very carefully and think about it
- Synonyms: Study, examine, investigate, look at carefully
- Example: The doctor will analyze the test results.
- Student sentence: “I analyze my homework before I start writing.”
- Drama action: Put hand to forehead, look closely at an object, nod thoughtfully
- DETERMINE
- Meaning: To find out or decide something for certain
- Simple meaning: To figure out or make up your mind about something
- Synonyms: Decide, find out, figure out, discover
- Example: We need to determine which book to read next.
- Student sentence: “I will determine which game to play at recess.”
- Drama action: Point finger up like “I’ve got it!” or tap temple while thinking
- INSTRUCTIONS
- Meaning: Directions or commands that tell you how to do something
- Simple meaning: The steps someone gives you to help you do something
- Synonyms: Directions, commands, orders, guidelines, steps
- Example: Follow the teacher’s instructions carefully.
- Student sentence: “My mother gave me instructions for making my bed.”
- Drama action: Point in different directions, use hands to show “first, then, next”
- EVIDENCE
- Meaning: Facts or information that prove something is true
- Simple meaning: Proof that shows something really happened
- Synonyms: Proof, facts, signs, clues
- Example: The footprints were evidence that someone was there.
- Student sentence: “The empty cookie jar was evidence that my brother ate the cookies.”
- Drama action: Hold up finger like “Look here!” and point to imaginary clues
- RELATIONSHIP
- Meaning: The way two or more things are connected to each other
- Simple meaning: How things go together or affect each other
- Synonyms: Connection, link, bond, association
- Example: There is a relationship between studying and good grades.
- Student sentence: “There is a relationship between eating healthy food and being strong.”
- Drama action: Hold hands together to show connection, or link arms with another student
- ENVIRONMENT
- Meaning: Everything around us, including air, water, land, and living things
- Simple meaning: All the things around us where we live
- Synonyms: Surroundings, area, place, habitat
- Example: We must keep our environment clean.
- Student sentence: “Plants and animals live in the forest environment.”
- Drama action: Spread arms wide to show “everything around us”
- CATEGORY
- Meaning: A group of things that are similar or belong together
- Simple meaning: A group where things that are alike go together
- Synonyms: Group, type, kind, class
- Example: Dogs and cats belong to the animal category.
- Student sentence: “Red, blue, and yellow belong in the color category.”
- Drama action: Use hands to make groups, sorting motions
- APPRECIATE
- Meaning: To be grateful for something or to understand its value
- Simple meaning: To say thank you and feel happy about something good
- Synonyms: Value, treasure, be grateful for, be thankful for
- Example: I appreciate my teacher’s help.
- Student sentence: “I appreciate my friend for sharing her lunch with me.”
- Drama action: Put hand over heart, smile warmly, bow slightly
- RECOGNIZE
- Meaning: To know or identify someone or something you have seen before
- Simple meaning: To know something when you see it again
