Introduction

Consonant sounds help us build words. When we know how to make these sounds correctly, we can read and speak better.

Beginning Consonant Sounds:

  1. /b/ – ball, bear, book, big
  2. /c/ – cat, car, cake, cup
  3. /d/ – dog, duck, door, drum
  4. /f/ – fish, fire, foot, fun
  5. /g/ – goat, game, girl, go
  6. /h/ – hat, house, happy, hen
  7. /j/ – jump, jam, jar, jet
  8. /k/ – kite, key, king, kid
  9. /l/ – lion, lamp, leg, love
  10. /m/ – mouse, moon, man, mat
  11. /n/ – net, nose, nail, no
  12. /p/ – pig, pen, pot, play
  13. /q/ – queen, quick, quiet, quiz

Song 1: “The Letter Sounds March” 🎵 “B says /b/ like bouncing ball, C says /c/ like cat so tall, D says /d/ like dancing dog, F says /f/ like jumping frog!” 🎵

Song 2: “Animal Consonant Song” 🎵 “G for goat that goes ‘baa baa’, H for hen that lays an egg, J for jaguar jumping high, K for kangaroo with long leg!” 🎵

Song 3: “Action Consonant Song” 🎵 “L for lion, loud and strong, M for monkey swinging along, N for newt that’s small and neat, P for penguin with webbed feet!” 🎵

Sound Production Techniques:

Lip Sounds:

  • /b/, /p/, /m/ – use both lips
  • Practice: “Buh-puh-muh, buh-puh-muh”

Tongue Tip Sounds:

  • /t/, /d/, /n/, /l/ – tongue touches roof of mouth
  • Practice: “Tuh-duh-nuh-luh”

Throat Sounds:

  • /k/, /g/ – back of tongue touches soft palate
  • Practice: “Kuh-guh-kuh-guh”

Teeth Sounds:

  • /f/, /v/ – teeth touch bottom lip
  • /s/, /z/ – teeth almost together
  • Practice: “Fff-vvv-sss-zzz”

Identifying Consonant Sounds in Words:

Initial Sounds (beginning):

  • Ball starts with /b/
  • Cat starts with /c/
  • Dog starts with /d/

Final Sounds (ending):

  • Bat ends with /t/
  • Big ends with /g/
  • Mom ends with /m/

Medial Sounds (middle):

  • Water has /t/ in the middle
  • Lemon has /m/ in the middle

Matching Sounds and Words Activity:

Match the sound to the word:

  1. /b/ → ball, book, banana
  2. /c/ → cat, car, cake
  3. /d/ → dog, door, duck
  4. /f/ → fish, fan, fire
  5. /g/ → goat, gate, girl

Word Building with Consonant Sounds:

  • /c/ + /a/ + /t/ = cat
  • /d/ + /o/ + /g/ = dog
  • /r/ + /u/ + /n/ = run
  • /s/ + /i/ + /t/ = sit
