Topic: Vocabulary Building – New Words And Their Meaning

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Combine new words to make meaning
  2. Explain the meaning of each new word
  3. Make use of the new words in sentences

Introduction

Building vocabulary means learning new words and understanding what they mean. The more words we know, the better we can express ourselves and understand others.

Content Development

New Words from Our Lessons:

  1. MEDICINE
  • Meaning: A substance that helps cure illness or reduce pain
  • Example: The doctor gave me medicine for my fever.
  • Word family: Medical, medicate, medication
  • Use in sentence: “Take this medicine twice a day to feel better.”
  1. DANGEROUS
  • Meaning: Something that can cause harm or injury
  • Example: Playing with fire is dangerous.
  • Opposite: Safe
  • Use in sentence: “It is dangerous to cross the road without looking.”
  1. PERMISSION
  • Meaning: Being allowed to do something by someone in authority
  • Example: Ask permission before leaving the classroom.
  • Word family: Permit, permissible
  • Use in sentence: “I got permission from my mother to visit my friend.”
  1. SHARING
  • Meaning: Giving part of what you have to others
  • Example: Sharing toys makes everyone happy.
  • Word family: Share, shared, shares
  • Use in sentence: “Sharing your lunch shows kindness.”
  1. GENEROUS
  • Meaning: Willing to give or share freely with others
  • Example: My grandmother is generous with her time.
  • Opposite: Selfish
  • Use in sentence: “The generous man gave food to the hungry children.”
  1. COMMUNITY
  • Meaning: A group of people living or working together in the same area
  • Example: Our school community includes students, teachers, and parents.
  • Use in sentence: “Everyone in our community helps keep it clean.”
  1. GRATEFUL
  • Meaning: Feeling thankful for something someone has done
  • Example: I am grateful for my teacher’s help.
  • Word family: Gratitude, gratefully
  • Use in sentence: “She was grateful for the help with her homework.”
  1. CHARACTER
  • Meaning: A person in a story, play, or movie
  • Example: My favorite character in the story is the brave princess.
  • Also means: The qualities that make a person who they are
  • Use in sentence: “Each character in the play had something important to say.”
  1. DIALOGUE
  • Meaning: A conversation between two or more people
  • Example: The dialogue between the teacher and student was helpful.
  • Use in sentence: “The play had interesting dialogue between the characters.”
  1. NUTRITION
  • Meaning: The process of eating the right food to stay healthy
  • Example: Good nutrition helps children grow strong.
  • Word family: Nutritious, nutritional
  • Use in sentence: “Fruits and vegetables provide good nutrition.”

Combining Words to Make Meaning:

Compound Understanding:

  • Medicine + Safety = Medicine Safety: Being careful with medicine
  • Community + Sharing = Community Sharing: Everyone in the area helping each other
  • Character + Development = Character Development: How people in stories change and grow

Word Relationships:

  • Generous + Sharing: Generous people like to share
  • Dangerous + Permission: We need permission for dangerous activities
  • Grateful + Community: Being thankful for community help

Using New Words in Context:

Story Example: “In our community, there lived a generous woman who always practiced sharing. She taught children about medicine safety and the dangerous things to avoid. The characters in her stories always had meaningful dialogue about being grateful and eating foods with good nutrition. She never did anything without her parents’ permission.”

  • Danger + ous = Dangerous

  • Permit + sion = Permission
