Consonant sounds help us build words and read fluently. Let’s review all the consonant sounds we’ve learned.

The 21 Consonant Sounds:

  1. /b/ – ball, book, baby
  2. /c/ – cat, car, cake
  3. /d/ – dog, door, duck
  4. /f/ – fish, fan, foot
  5. /g/ – goat, gate, girl
  6. /h/ – hat, house, hand
  7. /j/ – jump, jam, jet
  8. /k/ – kite, key, king
  9. /l/ – lion, lamp, leg
  10. /m/ – moon, man, mouse
  11. /n/ – net, nose, nail
  12. /p/ – pen, pig, pot
  13. /q/ – queen, quick, quiet

Sound Production Review:

Lip Sounds: /b/, /p/, /m/

  • Practice: “Buh-puh-mmm, buh-puh-mmm”
  • Action: Press lips together

Tongue Tip Sounds: /t/, /d/, /n/, /l/

  • Practice: “Tuh-duh-nuh-luh”
  • Action: Touch tongue to roof of mouth

Throat Sounds: /k/, /g/

  • Practice: “Kuh-guh, kuh-guh”
  • Action: Back of tongue touches soft palate

Teeth Sounds: /f/, /v/, /s/, /z/

  • Practice: “Fff-vvv-sss-zzz”
  • Action: Teeth touch lip or come together

Matching Sounds and Words:

Beginning Sound Matching:

  • /b/ → ball, book, baby, big
  • /c/ → cat, car, cake, cup
  • /d/ → dog, door, duck, doll
  • /f/ → fish, fan, foot, fun
  • /g/ → goat, gate, girl, go

Ending Sound Matching:

  • Words ending in /t/ → cat, hat, bat, mat
