Introduction

The /ai/ sound is a special vowel sound that we hear in words like “rain” and “train.” It’s made by putting two letters together to make one sound.

Content Development

What is the /ai/ Sound? The /ai/ sound is a vowel sound made when we put ‘a’ and ‘i’ together. It sounds like saying the letter ‘A’ (ay).

Common /ai/ Spelling Patterns:

Pattern 1: ai

  • rain – water falling from clouds
  • train – long vehicle that runs on tracks
  • chain – connected metal rings
  • brain – organ inside our head for thinking
  • plain – simple, not fancy
  • drain – where water goes away
  • grain – small pieces of rice or wheat
  • stain – a dirty mark
  • strain – to work very hard
  • main – the most important

Pattern 2: ay (makes the same sound)

  • play – to have fun with games
  • say – to speak words
  • day – 24 hours of time
  • way – the path or direction
  • may – might happen
  • bay – area where water meets land
  • lay – to put something down
  • pay – to give money
  • stay – to remain in one place
  • clay – soft earth for making pots

  • Start with your mouth open like saying “ah”
  • Move your tongue up like saying “ee”
  • The sound glides from /a/ to /i/
