DETAILED LESSON CONTENT

COMPREHENSION STRATEGIES

Strategy 1: Picture Reading

  • Look at all pictures before reading
  • Pictures tell part of the story
  • Use pictures to guess what might happen

Strategy 2: Predicting

  • Guess what will happen next
  • Use clues from pictures and words
  • Think about what makes sense

Strategy 3: Questioning Ask questions while reading:

  • Who is in the story?
  • Where does it happen?
  • What is happening?
  • Why did it happen?
  • How did it end?

Strategy 4: Retelling

  • Tell the story in your own words
  • Tell the most important parts
  • Tell what happened first, then, and last

SAMPLE READING PASSAGE

“My Dog Rex”

Rex is my dog. He is big and brown. Rex likes to play with a red ball. Every morning, Rex runs in the park with me. When Rex is hungry, he eats from his blue bowl. Rex is a good dog. He sleeps in my room at night. I love my dog Rex.

COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS

Who Questions:

  2. Who owns Rex? (the person telling the story)

What Questions:

  1. What color is Rex? (brown)
