MEANING OF GENDER DISCRIMINATION
Gender: Social and cultural differences between male and female.
Gender Discrimination: Unfair treatment of people based on their sex (male or female). Usually, women and girls face more discrimination.

Key Point: Both males and females are equal in value and ability, but society often treats them differently.
AREAS/EXAMPLES OF GENDER DISCRIMINATION:
- EDUCATION:
Discrimination:
- Girls not sent to school
- “Girls should stay home and help mother”
- Boys’ education prioritized
- Girls marry early, leaving school
- Some subjects considered “for boys only”
Effects:
- More illiterate women
- Fewer female professionals
- Limited opportunities for women
- EMPLOYMENT:
Discrimination:
- Women paid less than men for same work
- “Some jobs are for men only” (engineering, piloting)
- Women not promoted
- Pregnancy discrimination
- Sexual harassment at work
- Fewer women in leadership
Examples:
- Female doctor paid less than male doctor
- Women told “you can’t be a mechanic”
- Pregnant women fired
- POLITICS:
Discrimination:
- Few women in government
- “Politics is for men”
- Women not supported for elections
- Male dominance in leadership
- Women’s opinions ignored
Reality:
- Few female governors, senators
- No female president yet in Nigeria
- Women underrepresented
- DOMESTIC/HOME:
Discrimination:
- All housework for women
- Men don’t cook or clean
- Girls do more chores than boys
- Sons inherit property, daughters don’t
- Wife must obey husband always
- Domestic violence accepted
- INHERITANCE:
Discrimination:
- Sons inherit father’s property
- Daughters get nothing or very little
- Widows chased away
- Male child preference
- MARRIAGE:
Discrimination:
- Early marriage for girls
- Forced marriage
- Polygamy (man can marry many wives, but woman can’t)
- Bride price (like buying woman)
- Woman changes name, man doesn’t
- RELIGION:
Discrimination:
- Women cannot be pastors/imams in some places
- Seated separately
- Limited roles
- Men lead, women follow
- SPORTS:
Discrimination:
- Less funding for women’s sports
- Lower prize money
- Less media coverage
- “Football is for boys”
- LEGAL RIGHTS:
Discrimination:
- Some laws favor men
- Rape cases not taken seriously
- Domestic violence ignored
- Property rights unequal
- SOCIAL/CULTURAL:
Discrimination:
- Preference for male children
- Female genital mutilation (FGM)
- Widowhood practices
