What is Volleyball? Volleyball is a team sport where two teams of six players each try to score points by hitting a ball over a net and making it land in the opponent’s court.
Facilities in Volleyball (Places and fixed structures)
- Court – Rectangular playing area (18m × 9m)
- Net – Divides court into two halves (2.43m high for men, 2.24m for women)
- Center Line – Line under the net
- Attack Line – 3 meters from center line
- Service Area – Behind the end line
Equipment in Volleyball (Movable items)
- Volleyball – Inflated leather or synthetic ball
- Knee Pads – Protect knees when diving
- Sports Shoes – Non-marking rubber soles
- Net Antenna – Markers on the net sides
- Uniform – Jersey and shorts
- Whistle – Used by referee
Basic Skills in Volleyball
- Serving
- Underhand serve (easier for beginners)
- Overhand serve (more powerful)
- Jump serve (advanced)
- Passing (Bump)
- Using forearms to receive the ball
- Keep arms together and straight
- Setting
- Using fingertips to position ball for attacker
- Hands above head, fingers spread
- Spiking (Attacking)
- Jumping and hitting ball forcefully downward
- Requires good timing
- Blocking
- Jumping to stop opponent’s spike
- Arms extended above net
- Digging
- Defensive move to prevent ball from touching floor
- Often a diving motion
Basic Rules
- Each team has 3 touches maximum
- Ball must go over net
- Cannot touch net during play
- 25 points to win a set (best of 5 sets)
- Rally scoring (point on every serve)
Advantages of Playing Volleyball

- Builds teamwork and cooperation
- Strengthens muscles (legs, arms, core)

- Teaches discipline and sportsmanship

Safety Measures in Volleyball
- Warm up and stretch before playing
- Wear proper footwear
- Use knee pads to prevent injuries
- Keep court clean and dry
- Check net is properly secured
- Communicate with teammates to avoid collisions
- Stay hydrated during play
- Learn proper techniques to avoid injuries
- Have first aid kit available
- Follow referee’s instructions
