Networking Basic 5 Computer Studies Lesson Note
Topic: Networking

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION
MEANING OF COMPUTER NETWORK:
Networking is the sharing of data (information) between a set of connected computers.
It is the sharing of data (information) between a set of connected computers.
Networking has become one of the most successful ways of sharing information, where all computers are wirelessly linked together by a common network.
TYPES OF NETWORKING:
There are three (3) of computer network:
- Local Area Network (LAN)
- Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
- Wide Area Network (WAN)
LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN):
LAN is a set of computers connected together, usually within the same building.
For example – residence, school, laboratory, office within the same building.
METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK (MAN):
MAN is a set of computers connected together, usually within the same city.
For example – Lagos state.
WIDE AREA NETWORK (WAN):
WAN is a world wide network.
It connects large number of computers together.
LESSON 2 – COMPUTER NETWORK REQUIREMENTS
The requirements for computer network are as follows:
- Connecting cables
- A central computer
- Other computers
- Switch or Hub
- Network card for each computer
WHERE COMPUTER NETWORKS ARE USED:
Computer networks are used in the following:
- Schools e.g. University of Lagos, Lagos State Government University, Yaba College of Technology, etc.
- Government Offices e.g. Lagos State Government, Lagos – Ikeja

- It used for sharing resources
- It provides high reliability
- It is saves money
- It used as medium of communication
- It enhances communication and availability of information
- It makes file sharing easier between different users
REVISION AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT (TEST)
PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
- To revise the lesson: The teacher revises the lesson on the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions.
- Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class and available computers.
- Teacher displays chart showing types of computer network.
- Teacher tells pupils identify uses of computer network in their environment.
Pupil’s Activities: – Identify and differentiate between different types of computer network.
