What is an Operating System?

An operating system (OS) is the main software that controls how a computer works. It’s like the manager of all programs.

Types of Operating Systems

Windows:

  • Made by Microsoft company
  • Most common on home computers
  • Has a start button and desktop
  • Easy to use with mouse clicks

Linux:

 

  • Free operating system
  • Used by computer experts
  • Very secure and safe
  • Can run on old computers

Ubuntu:

  • A type of Linux
  • Free for everyone to use
  • Orange and purple colors
  • Good for schools and learning
