What is Security?

Security means keeping ourselves, our things, and our information safe from danger, theft, or harm.

Four Important Elements of Security

  1. Confidentiality

What is Confidentiality?

  • Keeping secrets and private information safe
  • Not telling others what they shouldn’t know
  • Protecting personal details

Examples of Confidentiality:

  • Not telling strangers your home address
  • Keeping your parents’ phone number private
  • Not sharing your friend’s secrets with others
  • Protecting your family’s private matters

How to Practice Confidentiality:

  • Don’t give personal information to strangers
  • Keep family secrets within the family
  • Don’t read other people’s letters or diaries
  • Protect passwords and private codes

What is Integrity?

  • Making sure information is correct and complete
  • Not changing or damaging things that belong to others
  • Keeping things exactly as they should be

Examples of Integrity:

  • Not changing answers on someone else’s homework
  • Telling the truth about what happened
  • Not breaking or damaging school property
  • Keeping messages the same when passing them along

How to Practice Integrity:

  • Always tell the truth
  • Don’t change other people’s work
  • Take care of things that belong to others
  • Report information exactly as you heard it

What is Authenticity?

  • Making sure things and people are real and genuine
  • Proving that something is truly what it claims to be
  • Not accepting fake or false things

Examples of Authenticity:

  • Checking if a person is really who they say they are
  • Making sure money is not fake
  • Verifying that messages come from the right person
  • Confirming that documents are real

How to Practice Authenticity:

  • Ask adults to verify strangers who claim to know you
  • Check with parents before believing unusual messages
  • Don’t accept gifts from unknown people
  • Verify information with trusted adults

What is Availability?

  • Making sure important things and people are there when needed
  • Ensuring help and resources can be reached easily
  • Being ready to provide assistance when required

Examples of Availability:

  • Emergency numbers being reachable
  • Teachers being present when students need help
  • First aid kits being accessible during emergencies
  • Security guards being at their posts

How to Practice Availability:

  • Be present when people are counting on you
  • Keep important phone numbers handy
  • Make sure safety equipment is always ready
  • Be reliable and dependable

Why These Elements Are Important

  • They keep us safe from harm and danger
  • They protect our personal information
  • They help us trust each other
  • They make our community secure and peaceful
