Ihuokwu (Phrases)

What is Ihuokwu?

Ihuokwu is a group of words that work together but do not have a complete meaning by themselves.

Types of Ihuokwu

Ihuokwu Aha (Noun Phrases)

  • nwata nke ọma – good child

 

  • ụlọ ukwu – big house
  • akwụkwọ m – my book
  • mmiri ọhụrụ – fresh water
  • nri dị ụtọ – sweet food

Ihuokwu Omume (Verb Phrases)

  • na-aga ahịa – going to market
  • na-ede akwụkwọ – writing a book
  • na-egwu egwuregwu – playing games
  • na-arụ ọrụ – working

Azuokwu (Clauses)

What is Azuokwu?

Azuokwu is a group of words that has both a subject and a verb and can express a complete thought.

Examples of Azuokwu

  • Ada na-aga ụlọakwụkwọ – Ada is going to school
  • Nna m na-arụ ọrụ – My father is working
  • Ọ na-ede akwụkwọ – He/she is writing a book
  • Anyị na-eri nri – We are eating food
  • Ha na-abịa ụlọ – They are coming home

Differences (Ọdịiche)

Ihuokwu (Phrases):

  • No complete meaning alone
  • Missing subject or verb
  • Example: ụlọ ukwu (big house)

Azuokwu (Clauses):

  • Has complete meaning
  • Has both subject and verb
  • Example: Ọ bi n’ụlọ ukwu (He lives in a big house)

Building from Ihuokwu to Azuokwu

Step 1: Start with Ihuokwu

nwata nke ọma (good child)

Step 2: Add verb to make Azuokwu

Nwata nke ọma na-agụ akwụkwọ (The good child is reading)

Class Work

Work in pairs. One person says an Ihuokwu, the partner adds words to make it an Azuokwu. Take turns.

Homework

  1. Find 5 Ihuokwu and 5 Azuokwu from your Igbo reader
  2. Write 3 sentences that contain both Ihuokwu and Azuokwu
  3. Practice turning Ihuokwu into Azuokwu with your family
