Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

Lesson Content:
WHAT IS SALATÜL-QASR?
Definition: Salatül-Qasr (صلاة القصر) means “Shortened Prayer.” It is the Islamic practice of shortening four-rakat prayers to two rakats when traveling a certain distance.
Arabic Terms:
- Salah = Prayer
- Qasr = Shortening/Reduction
CONDITIONS FOR PERFORMING QASR:
- Distance of Travel
- Must travel at least 80 kilometers (about 50 miles)
- Distance should be in one direction
- Calculated from city limits, not from house
- Intention of Travel
- Must intend to travel before starting journey
- Should have legitimate reason for travel
- Temporary travel, not permanent migration
- Departure from Home
- Must have left home area/city
- Journey should have actually begun
- Not applicable within home city
- Not Intending Long Stay
- Planning to stay less than 4 days at destination
- If staying longer, resume full prayers
- Applies to temporary visits
WHICH PRAYERS ARE SHORTENED?
Prayers That Are Shortened:
- Dhuhr – From 4 rakats to 2 rakats
- Asr – From 4 rakats to 2 rakats
- Isha – From 4 rakats to 2 rakats
Prayers That Are NOT Shortened:
- Fajr – Remains 2 rakats (already short)
- Maghrib – Remains 3 rakats (special structure)
HOW TO PERFORM QASR:
Method:
- Make intention for travel prayer (Qasr)
- Perform only 2 rakats instead of 4
- Recite normally in each rakat
- Complete with Tashahhud and Salam
- No additional Sunnah prayers required
Example – Dhuhr Prayer While Traveling:
- Normal Dhuhr: 4 rakats
- Qasr Dhuhr: 2 rakats only
- Same recitations, just fewer rakats
IMPORTANCE OF OBSERVING QASR:
- Following Prophetic Guidance
- Prophet Muhammad (SAW) always shortened prayers when traveling
- Sunnah of the Prophet
- Part of Islamic travel etiquette
- Divine Mercy
- Allah made religion easy for travelers
- Shows Allah’s care and compassion
- Reduces burden during journey
- Practical Benefits
- Saves time during travel
- Reduces physical fatigue
- Allows focus on journey safety
- Spiritual Significance
- Shows flexibility in Islamic worship
- Maintains connection with Allah while traveling
- Demonstrates balance in religion
- Unity Among Muslims
- All Muslims follow same travel rules
- Creates uniformity in practice
- Strengthens Islamic identity
WHEN TO START AND STOP QASR:
When to Start:
- As soon as you leave city limits
- Continue throughout the journey
- At your destination (if staying less than 4 days)
When to Stop:
- When you return home
- If you intend to stay more than 4 days somewhere
- When you become resident of new place
COMBINING PRAYERS (JAM’) WHILE TRAVELING:
Allowed Combinations:
- Dhuhr + Asr – Can pray together
- Maghrib + Isha – Can pray together
Benefits:
- More convenient during travel
- Reduces number of prayer stops
- Saves time and effort
COMMON SITUATIONS:
- School Trip:
- If traveling more than 80km for school trip
- Staying overnight away from home
- Can perform Qasr prayers
- Family Visit:
- Visiting relatives in another city
- Staying for weekend (less than 4 days)
- Eligible for Qasr
- Pilgrimage (Hajj/Umrah):
- Traveling to Makkah or Madinah
- Away from home for religious purpose
- Should perform Qasr prayers
IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
- Qasr is recommended (Mustahab), not compulsory
- Can choose to pray full prayers if preferred
- Should not miss prayers because of travel
- Always maintain prayer times
- Seek guidance from knowledgeable scholars when in doubt
