Origin Stories of Lagos Indigenous People
Awori People:

- They came from Ile-Ife long ago
- They were led by a hunter who found the lagoon (big water)
- They settled around Lagos Island and mainland
- Their name “Awori” means “people who settled by the lagoon”
Egun People:
- They came from the ancient Benin Kingdom
- They moved to the coastal areas for fishing
- They are skilled fishermen and traders
Ijebu People:

- They also came from Ile-Ife
- They settled in the eastern part of Lagos State
- They are known for trading and farming
Relationships Among Indigenous People
- All three groups are friends and neighbors
- They trade with each other (buy and sell things)
- They sometimes marry people from other groups
- They share similar customs and festivals
- They all respect traditional rulers (kings and chiefs)
