What is an Indigene? An indigene is a person who was born in a place or whose family comes from that place originally. They are the first people to live in an area.
Indigenous People of Lagos State The main indigenous (original) people of Lagos State are:
- Awori people – They are the largest group

Egun people – They live mostly in Badagry area

Ijebu people – They live in Ijebu-Ode and the surrounding areas

How to Identify Indigenous People
By Language:
- Awori people speak Awori language (similar to Yoruba)
- Egun people speak Egun language
- Ijebu people speak Ijebu dialect of Yoruba
By Foods:
- Awori people eat foods like amala, ewedu, and fish

- Egun people eat lots of fish, coconut rice, and pepper soup

- Ijebu people are famous for eating snails and garri
