What is Occupation? Occupation is the work that people do to earn money and take care of their families.
What is Transportation? Transportation is how people and things move from one place to another.
Indigenous Occupations in Lagos
Awori People’s Jobs:
- Fishing – catching fish from lagoons and sea

- Farming – growing yam, cassava, plantain

- Trading – buying and selling goods

- Salt making – getting salt from sea water

- Craft making – making pots, baskets, mats

Egun People’s Jobs:
- Fishing – their main work
- Canoe making – building boats

- Net making – making fishing nets
- Trading – especially fish and sea products
Ijebu People’s Jobs:
- Farming – growing crops
- Trading – buying and selling
- Palm wine tapping – getting palm wine from palm trees

- Blacksmithing – making iron tools

Indigenous Transportation in Lagos
Water Transport:
- Canoes – small boats for rivers and lagoons

- Big boats – for longer trips on water

- Rafts – made from wood, for carrying goods

Land Transport:
- Walking – most common way to travel

- Head carrying – carrying things on the head

- Horses – for longer distances (rare)

- Donkeys – for carrying heavy loads

Popular Transport Routes:
- From Lagos Island to mainland by canoe
- Along the coast by boats
- Bush paths for walking between villages
