Main Division of Lagos State: IBILE

What is IBILE? IBILE is a Yoruba word that refers to the indigenous (original) people of Lagos State. It represents the three main ethnic groups that originally lived in Lagos before other people came.

The Three Groups in IBILE:

I – Ijebu People

  • They live mainly in Ikorodu, Epe and surrounding areas
  • They are known for trading and farming
  • They speak Ijebu dialect of Yoruba language

B – Bini/Edo People

  • Some Bini people settled in Lagos long ago
  • They came from Benin Kingdom (now Edo State)
  • They brought skills in crafts and trading

I – Igbomina/Indigenous Awori

  • The Awori people are the largest indigenous group
  • They live on Lagos Island, mainland, and many other areas
  • They were the first to settle on Lagos Island

L – (Actually represents the unity of Lagos)

  • Shows how all groups work together
  • Represents the bond between all indigenous people

E – Egun People

  • They live mainly in Badagry area
  • They are skilled fishermen and traders
  • They came from ancient Benin Kingdom

Why IBILE is Important:

  • It shows respect for the original people of Lagos
  • It reminds us that Lagos belongs to its indigenous people first
  • It promotes unity among different ethnic groups
  • It preserves the culture and traditions of Lagos

Lagos State Logo and Colors

Colors of Lagos State Logo:

Blue Color:

  • Meaning: Represents the water bodies around Lagos
  • Shows the lagoons, rivers, and Atlantic Ocean
  • Reminds us that Lagos is surrounded by water
  • Represents peace and calmness

Green Color:

  • Meaning: Represents the land and vegetation
  • Shows the forests, farmlands, and plants
  • Represents growth and prosperity
  • Shows that Lagos is growing and developing

White Color:

  • Meaning: Represents peace and unity
  • Shows that all people in Lagos live together peacefully
  • Represents honesty and truth in government
  • Shows hope for a bright future

Gold/Yellow Color:

  • Meaning: Represents the wealth and prosperity of Lagos
  • Shows that Lagos is rich and successful
  • Represents the golden opportunities in Lagos
  • Shows the bright sunshine and happiness

The Logo Design:

  • The logo shows the outline of Lagos State
  • It has symbols representing water, land, and progress
  • It includes elements that show Lagos as a center of commerce
  • The design reflects both traditional and modern Lagos

Lagos State Motto: “Centre of Excellence” – This means Lagos tries to be the best in everything it does.
