Topic: Duties Of A Community Leader

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this lesson, pupils should be able to:

  • Explain the meaning of duties
  • Discuss the duties of a community leader
  • Outline the characteristics of a good leader

Lesson Content:

What are Duties? Duties are the important tasks or jobs that someone must do because of their position or role. They are responsibilities that cannot be ignored.

Examples of Duties:

  • Your duty as a student is to study hard
  • Your parents’ duty is to take care of you
  • A teacher’s duty is to teach students
  • A leader’s duty is to guide and protect people

Why Duties are Important:

  • They help things work properly
  • They ensure everyone knows what to do
  • They bring order and progress
  • They help achieve common goals

MAJOR DUTIES OF A COMMUNITY LEADER:

  1. MAINTAINING LAW AND ORDER: What this means: Ensuring everyone follows the rules and lives peacefully.

How they do this:

  • Make rules for the community to follow
  • Punish people who break the rules
  • Settle disputes between community members
  • Work with police and security agencies
  • Prevent crime and violence

Example: If two neighbors are fighting over land, the community leader listens to both sides and makes a fair decision.

  1. SETTLING DISPUTES: What this means: Solving disagreements and conflicts between people.

How they do this:

  • Listen to all sides of the problem
  • Ask questions to understand the truth
  • Give fair judgment based on evidence
  • Help people find peaceful solutions
  • Use traditional laws and customs

Example: When traders disagree about market prices, the leader calls a meeting and helps them reach an agreement.

  1. REPRESENTING THE COMMUNITY: What this means: Speaking for the people and their needs to government and other organizations.

How they do this:

  • Attend meetings with government officials
  • Present community problems and needs
  • Ask for government assistance and projects
  • Invite important visitors to the community
  • Sign documents on behalf of the community

Example: When the community needs a new school, the leader writes to the government requesting help.

  1. PRESERVING CULTURE AND TRADITION: What this means: Keeping the community’s customs, festivals, and way of life alive.

How they do this:

  • Organize traditional festivals and ceremonies
  • Teach young people about their culture
  • Protect historical sites and artifacts
  • Ensure traditional laws are followed
  • Maintain the local language

Example: Organizing the annual yam festival to celebrate the harvest season.

  1. PROVIDING GUIDANCE AND ADVICE: What this means: Helping people make good decisions and solve personal problems.

How they do this:

  • Give wise counsel to people with problems
  • Help young people choose good careers
  • Advise families on important decisions
  • Share experiences and wisdom
  • Encourage good behavior

Example: Advising parents on how to train their children properly.

  1. ENSURING COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: What this means: Working to improve the community and make life better for everyone.

How they do this:

  • Plan and execute community projects
  • Mobilize people for collective work
  • Seek funding for development projects
  • Monitor progress of ongoing projects
  • Coordinate with development agencies

Example: Organizing the community to build a health center or dig a well.

  1. PROTECTING THE COMMUNITY: What this means: Keeping the people safe from danger and harm.

How they do this:

  • Work with security agencies
  • Organize community security watch
  • Report criminal activities to authorities
  • Protect community resources
  • Ensure emergency preparedness

Example: Setting up a neighborhood watch to prevent theft and burglary.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD LEADER:

  1. HONESTY:
  • Always tells the truth
  • Doesn’t steal community money or property
  • Admits mistakes and corrects them
  • Keeps promises made to the people
  1. FAIRNESS:
  • Treats everyone equally regardless of friendship or family
  • Makes decisions based on truth, not favoritism
  • Gives everyone a chance to be heard
  • Doesn’t take sides unjustly
  1. WISDOM:
  • Makes smart decisions
  • Learns from experience
  • Seeks advice when necessary
  • Thinks about consequences before acting
  1. COURAGE:
  • Stands up for what is right
  • Faces difficult situations bravely
  • Protects the weak from oppression
  • Takes necessary but unpopular decisions
  1. PATIENCE:
  • Doesn’t get angry quickly
  • Takes time to understand problems
  • Listens carefully to all sides
  • Remains calm during difficult times
  1. HUMILITY:
  • Doesn’t think they are better than others
  • Accepts criticism and learns from it
  • Serves the people without pride
  • Acknowledges the contributions of others
  1. COMPASSION:
  • Shows care and concern for people
  • Helps those in need
  • Understands people’s problems
  • Shows mercy to those who make mistakes
  1. RELIABILITY:
  • Can be trusted to do what they promise
  • Consistent in their actions
  • Available when people need help
  • Keeps appointments and commitments
  1. GOOD COMMUNICATION:
  • Explains things clearly
  • Listens to people’s concerns
  • Speaks the local language well
  • Uses kind and respectful words
  1. DEDICATION:
  • Committed to serving the community
  • Works hard for the people’s welfare
  • Puts community needs before personal interests
  • Available to serve at all times

Class Activity:

Role-play different scenarios where pupils take turns being community leaders dealing with various problems. Discuss what makes each leader effective or ineffective.
