What are National Symbols?

National symbols are special signs, objects, and words that represent our country Nigeria. They help us recognize our nation and show our identity.

Description of Nigeria’s National Symbols

National Map

The national map shows the shape and size of Nigeria.

Features of Nigeria’s Map:

  • Shows Nigeria’s borders with other countries
  • Has 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)
  • Rivers Niger and Benue flow through it
  • Nigeria is in West Africa
  • It looks like a rectangle with curves

What the Map Shows:

  • Nigeria borders Benin, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon
  • The Atlantic Ocean is at the bottom (south)
  • Abuja is the capital city in the middle
  • Lagos is the biggest city in the southwest

Coat of Arms

 

The coat of arms is Nigeria’s official symbol found on government documents.

Parts of the Coat of Arms:

  • Black eagle – represents strength and pride
  • White horse – represents dignity
  • Green and white shield – shows our flag colors
  • Red flowers – represent beauty and nature
  • Yellow ribbon – has “Unity and Work, Progress”

National Anthem

Title: “Nigeria, We Hail Thee”

Purpose of the National Anthem:

  • We sing it to show love for Nigeria
  • It reminds us to work together
  • Makes us feel proud to be Nigerians
  • Brings unity among all citizens

National Pledge

The Nigerian Pledge: “I pledge to Nigeria my country To be faithful, loyal and honest To serve Nigeria with all my strength To defend her unity and uphold her honor and glory So help me God.”

Purpose of the National Pledge:

  • We promise to be loyal to Nigeria
  • Shows we will serve our country faithfully
  • We promise to defend Nigeria’s unity
  • We ask God to help us keep our promises
