What is Tillage?

Tillage means preparing the soil for planting crops. Farmers use special tools to break up hard soil, remove weeds, and make the ground ready for seeds.

Common Tillage Tools

  1. Hoe
  • What it looks like: A flat metal blade on a long wooden handle
  • What it does: Breaks up soil and removes weeds
  • How to use: Hold the handle and chop into the soil
  1. Cutlass (Machete)
  • What it looks like: A long, sharp metal blade with a handle
  • What it does: Cuts grass, weeds, and small bushes
  • How to use: Swing carefully to cut plants
  1. Rake
  • What it looks like: Metal or wooden teeth on a handle
  • What it does: Smooths soil and gathers leaves or grass
  • How to use: Pull across the ground to level soil
  1. Spade
  • What it looks like: A flat, pointed metal blade with a handle
  • What it does: Digs holes and turns over soil
  • How to use: Push into soil with your foot and lift
