Topic: Maintenance and Care of Farm Tools

What Is Tool Maintenance?

Tool maintenance means taking good care of farm tools so they work well for a long time. Just like we take care of our toys and clothes, farm tools need care too!

Why Should We Care for Farm Tools?

  • Tools last longer when we take care of them
  • Well-kept tools work better and faster
  • Clean tools are safer to use
  • Taking care of tools saves money
  • Proper care prevents tools from breaking

How to Care for Farm Tools

  1. Clean After Use
  • Wash off dirt and mud after every use
  • Wipe tools dry with a clean cloth
  • Remove plant materials stuck on blades
  • Use water and soap for very dirty tools
  1. Dry Properly
  • Always dry tools completely before storing
  • Leave tools in the sun to air dry
  • Never store wet tools – they will rust
  • Use a towel to dry hard-to-reach places
  1. Store Safely
  • Keep tools in a dry place like a shed or barn
  • Hang tools on hooks or place on shelves
  • Don’t leave tools outside in rain or sun
  • Keep sharp tools away from children
  1. Sharpen When Needed
  • Sharp tools work better than dull ones
  • Ask an adult to help sharpen knives and blades
  • Use a file or sharpening stone carefully
  • Test sharpness on grass or paper (with adult help)
  1. Oil Moving Parts
  • Put a little oil on hinges and joints
  • This prevents rust and keeps tools moving smoothly
  • Use machine oil or cooking oil
  • Wipe off extra oil with a cloth
  1. Check for Damage
  • Look for cracks in handles
  • Check for rust on metal parts
  • Replace broken handles before using
  • Fix small problems before they become big ones

Simple Daily Care Steps
