About Suratul-Inshirah:

Basic Information:

  • Chapter 94 of the Holy Quran
  • Name means “The Expansion” or “The Opening”
  • Contains 8 verses
  • Revealed in Makkah (Makki Surah)
  • Also known as “Alam Nashrah” (Did We not expand?)

Historical Context:

  • Revealed during early difficult period of Prophet’s mission
  • When Prophet was facing opposition and hardship
  • Divine comfort and encouragement from Allah
  • Promise of relief and success

Arabic Text with Transliteration and Translation:

Verse 1: أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ Transliteration: “Alam nashrah laka sadraka” Translation: “Did We not expand for you, [O Muhammad], your breast?”

Verse 2: وَوَضَعْنَا عَنكَ وِزْرَكَ Transliteration: “Wa wada’nā ‘anka wizraka” Translation: “And We removed from you your burden”

Verse 3: الَّذِي أَنقَضَ ظَهْرَكَ Transliteration: “Alladhī anqada zahrak” Translation: “Which had weighed upon your back”

Verse 4: وَرَفَعْنَا لَكَ ذِكْرَكَ Transliteration: “Wa rafa’nā laka dhikraka” Translation: “And raised high for you your repute.”

Verse 5: فَإِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا Transliteration: “Fa-inna ma’a al-‘usri yusran” Translation: “For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.”

Verse 6: إِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا Transliteration: “Inna ma’a al-‘usri yusran” Translation: “Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.”

Verse 7: فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَانصَبْ Transliteration: “Fa-idhā faraghta fansab” Translation: “So when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship].”

Verse 8: وَإِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَارْغَب Transliteration: “Wa ilā rabbika farghab” Translation: “And to your Lord direct [your] longing.”

Detailed Explanation:

Verses 1-4: Allah’s Past Blessings

Verse 1: Expansion of the Chest

“Sharh al-Sadr” (Expansion of Chest):

Spiritual Meaning:

  • Inner peace and tranquility
  • Removal of anxiety and worry
  • Increased capacity for wisdom and understanding
  • Strengthening of heart for prophetic mission

Physical Event:

  • Some scholars refer to the incident when angels opened Prophet’s chest
  • Purified his heart and filled it with wisdom and faith
  • Prepared him for receiving divine revelation
  • Protected him from Satan’s influence

Practical Effects:

  • Ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Patience with difficulties and opposition
  • Wisdom in dealing with complex situations
  • Strong faith despite challenges

Verse 2-3: Removal of Burden

What Was the Burden? Different interpretations:

Spiritual Burden:

  • Weight of seeing people in ignorance and darkness
  • Concern for humanity’s spiritual condition
  • Responsibility of carrying divine message
  • Worry about people’s guidance

Past Concerns:

  • Any minor shortcomings before prophethood
  • Concerns about fulfilling the prophetic mission
  • Weight of responsibility placed on him
  • Anxiety about facing opposition

How Allah Removed It:

  • Granted forgiveness and purification
  • Provided divine guidance and support
  • Gave strength to carry the message
  • Assured him of ultimate success

Verse 4: Raising of Reputation

“Rafa’na laka dhikraka”:

In This World:

  • Prophet’s name mentioned with Allah’s name in Shahada
  • Five times daily in Adhan (call to prayer)
  • Respect and love from billions of Muslims
  • His teachings spread worldwide

Historical Recognition:

  • Acknowledged as great leader even by non-Muslims
  • His character praised by enemies and friends
  • Influence on world civilization and culture
  • Model of excellence for all humanity

In the Hereafter:

  • High station with Allah
  • Intercession for his followers
  • Special honors and recognition
  • Eternal glory and blessing

Verses 5-6: The Universal Promise

“Ma’a al-‘usri yusra” (With Hardship, Ease):

Why Repeated Twice?

  • Emphasis on certainty of promise
  • Every hardship brings multiple ease
  • Allah never breaks His promises
  • Comfort for all believers in difficulty

Key Points:

  • “Ma’a” (With): Ease comes WITH hardship, not after
  • Arabic grammar: One hardship (al-‘usr) with two ease (yusran)
  • Ease is stronger than hardship
  • This is divine law, not just for Prophet

Examples in Prophet’s Life:

  • Opposition in Makkah → Victory in Madinah
  • Few early followers → Large Muslim community

Verses 7-8: Instructions for Success

Verse 7: When You Finish, Stand Up

Multiple Interpretations:

  1. From One Task to Another:
  • When you finish one duty, start another
  • Never be idle or lazy
  • Continuous effort and work
  • No rest from serving Allah
  1. From Worldly to Spiritual:
  • After completing worldly duties, turn to worship
  • Balance between material and spiritual life
  • Prayer and remembrance after work
  • Prioritizing spiritual development
  1. From Difficulty to Gratitude:
  • When hardship ends, stand up in gratitude
  • Thank Allah for relief and blessings
  • Don’t forget Allah in times of ease

Verse 8: Direct Your Longing to Your Lord

“Raghba” (Longing/Desire):

  • Turn all hopes and desires to Allah
  • Don’t depend on creation for everything
  • Seek help and guidance from Allah only
  • Allah alone can fulfill all needs

Practical Application:

  • Make du’a sincerely to Allah
  • Hope for Allah’s mercy and blessing
  • Work hard but trust in Allah’s plan
  • Seek Allah’s pleasure in all actions

Importance and Uses of Suratul-Inshirah:
