About Suratul-Inshirah:
Basic Information:
- Chapter 94 of the Holy Quran
- Name means “The Expansion” or “The Opening”
- Contains 8 verses
- Revealed in Makkah (Makki Surah)
- Also known as “Alam Nashrah” (Did We not expand?)
Historical Context:
- Revealed during early difficult period of Prophet’s mission
- When Prophet was facing opposition and hardship
- Divine comfort and encouragement from Allah
- Promise of relief and success
Arabic Text with Transliteration and Translation:
Verse 1: أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ Transliteration: “Alam nashrah laka sadraka” Translation: “Did We not expand for you, [O Muhammad], your breast?”
Verse 2: وَوَضَعْنَا عَنكَ وِزْرَكَ Transliteration: “Wa wada’nā ‘anka wizraka” Translation: “And We removed from you your burden”
Verse 3: الَّذِي أَنقَضَ ظَهْرَكَ Transliteration: “Alladhī anqada zahrak” Translation: “Which had weighed upon your back”
Verse 4: وَرَفَعْنَا لَكَ ذِكْرَكَ Transliteration: “Wa rafa’nā laka dhikraka” Translation: “And raised high for you your repute.”
Verse 5: فَإِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا Transliteration: “Fa-inna ma’a al-‘usri yusran” Translation: “For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.”
Verse 6: إِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا Transliteration: “Inna ma’a al-‘usri yusran” Translation: “Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.”
Verse 7: فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَانصَبْ Transliteration: “Fa-idhā faraghta fansab” Translation: “So when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship].”
Verse 8: وَإِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَارْغَب Transliteration: “Wa ilā rabbika farghab” Translation: “And to your Lord direct [your] longing.”

Verses 1-4: Allah’s Past Blessings
Verse 1: Expansion of the Chest
“Sharh al-Sadr” (Expansion of Chest):
Spiritual Meaning:
- Inner peace and tranquility
- Removal of anxiety and worry
- Increased capacity for wisdom and understanding
- Strengthening of heart for prophetic mission
Physical Event:
- Some scholars refer to the incident when angels opened Prophet’s chest
- Purified his heart and filled it with wisdom and faith
- Prepared him for receiving divine revelation
- Protected him from Satan’s influence

“Rafa’na laka dhikraka”:

- Acknowledged as great leader even by non-Muslims

Verses 5-6: The Universal Promise
“Ma’a al-‘usri yusra” (With Hardship, Ease):
Why Repeated Twice?
- Emphasis on certainty of promise
- Every hardship brings multiple ease
- Allah never breaks His promises

- “Ma’a” (With): Ease comes WITH hardship, not after
- Arabic grammar: One hardship (al-‘usr) with two ease (yusran)
- Ease is stronger than hardship

“Raghba” (Longing/Desire):
- Turn all hopes and desires to Allah
- Don’t depend on creation for everything
- Seek help and guidance from Allah only
- Allah alone can fulfill all needs
