About Suratul-Tin:

Basic Information:

  • Chapter 95 of the Holy Quran
  • Name means “The Fig”
  • Contains 8 verses
  • Revealed in Makkah (Makki Surah)
  • Short but profound chapter about human nature

Arabic Text with Transliteration and Translation:

Verse 1: وَالتِّينِ وَالزَّيْتُونِ Transliteration: “Wat-tīni waz-zaytūn” Translation: “By the fig and the olive,”

Verse 2: وَطُورِ سِينِينَ Transliteration: “Wa tūri sīnīn” Translation: “And [by] Mount Sinai,”

Verse 3: وَهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ الْأَمِينِ Transliteration: “Wa hādhāl-baladil-amīn” Translation: “And [by] this secure city,”

Verse 4: لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ فِي أَحْسَنِ تَقْوِيمٍ Transliteration: “Laqad khalaqnāl-insāna fī ahsani taqwīm” Translation: “We have certainly created mankind in the best stature;”

Verse 5: ثُمَّ رَدَدْنَاهُ أَسْفَلَ سَافِلِينَ Transliteration: “Thumma radadnāhu asfala sāfilīn” Translation: “Then We return him to the lowest of the low,”

Verse 6: إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ فَلَهُمْ أَجْرٌ غَيْرُ مَمْنُونٍ Transliteration: “Illal-ladhīna āmanū wa ‘amilus-sālihāti falahum ajrun ghayru mamnūn” Translation: “Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds, for they will have a reward uninterrupted.”

Verse 7: فَمَا يُكَذِّبُكَ بَعْدُ بِالدِّينِ Transliteration: “Famā yukadhdhibuka ba’du bid-dīn” Translation: “So what yet causes you to deny the Recompense?”

Verse 8: أَلَيْسَ اللَّهُ بِأَحْكَمِ الْحَاكِمِينَ Transliteration: “Alaysa Allāhu bi-ahkami al-hākimīn” Translation: “Is not Allah the most just of judges?”

Verses 1-3: The Sacred Oaths

Allah swears by four sacred things to emphasize the importance of the message:

  1. The Fig (At-Tin):
  • Sweet, nutritious fruit
  • Symbol of blessing and goodness
  • Some scholars say it refers to the land where figs grow (Damascus area)
  • May refer to the time of Prophet Isa (Jesus)
  1. The Olive (Az-Zaytun):
  • Blessed tree mentioned often in Quran
  • Source of oil, food, and medicine
  • Symbol of peace and blessing
  • Some say it refers to Jerusalem/Palestine area

  1. Mount Sinai (Tur Sinin):
  • Holy mountain where Prophet Musa (Moses) received the Torah

  • Sacred location in Sinai Peninsula
  1. This Secure City (Al-Balad Al-Amin):
  • Refers to Makkah, the holy city
  • Place of Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) mission
  • Secure sanctuary since time of Prophet Ibrahim
  • Center of Islamic worship (Kaaba)

Significance of These Oaths:

  • Represent different prophets and their messages
  • Show unity of divine guidance throughout history
  • Connect major monotheistic religions
  • Emphasize sacred places and times

Verse 4: Human Creation in Best Form

“Ahsan Taqwim” (Best Stature): This phrase has multiple meanings:

Physical Excellence:

  • Humans created with perfect physical form
  • Upright posture, balanced proportions
  • Beautiful and functional body design
  • Superior to all other creatures physically

Mental Excellence:

  • Given intelligence and reasoning ability
  • Capacity to learn, think, and understand
  • Ability to solve problems and create
  • Memory and imagination capabilities

Spiritual Excellence:

  • Given soul and connection to Allah
  • Capacity for moral and spiritual growth
  • Ability to worship and seek truth
  • Potential for righteousness and goodness

Social Excellence:

  • Ability to communicate through language
  • Capacity for cooperation and organization
  • Skills for building civilization
  • Potential for justice and leadership

Verse 5: The Fall to Lowest State

“Asfal Safilin” (Lowest of the Low):

What Does This Mean?

  • Humans can fall below the level of animals
  • Moral and spiritual degradation
  • Loss of human dignity and values
  • Becoming worse than beasts in behavior

How Does This Happen?

  • Rejecting Allah’s guidance
  • Following desires instead of reason
  • Committing sins and injustice
  • Ignoring moral and spiritual development

Examples:

  • Cruelty and oppression of others
  • Greed and selfishness
  • Lying, cheating, and corruption
  • Destruction and violence

Verse 6: The Exception

Those Who Are Saved: Two conditions save humans from falling:

  1. Iman (Faith):
  • Believing in Allah and His guidance
  • Accepting prophets and their messages
  • Having strong spiritual foundation
  • Trusting in divine wisdom
  1. Amal Salih (Righteous Deeds):
  • Acting according to faith
  • Helping others and doing good
  • Following moral and ethical principles
  • Contributing positively to society

Reward for Believers:

  • “Ajrun Ghayru Mamnun” – Unlimited reward
  • Never-ending blessing from Allah
  • Paradise and eternal happiness
  • Honor and dignity with Allah

Verses 7-8: Final Questions

Verse 7: Challenge to Deniers

  • After this clear explanation, why deny judgment?
  • Evidence is clear about human nature and destiny
  • Day of Judgment is logical and necessary
  • No excuse for rejection after understanding

Verse 8: Allah’s Perfect Justice

  • Allah is the wisest and most just judge
  • His judgment will be perfect and fair
  • No injustice or error in His decisions
  • Complete knowledge and absolute wisdom

Importance and Uses of Suratul-Tin:
