What are Components?

Components are the different parts that make up something. Civic education has many parts that help us learn to be good citizens.

Main Components of Civic Education

  1. National Identity

  • Learning about Nigeria
  • Knowing our national symbols (flag, anthem, coat of arms)
  • Understanding our history
  • Being proud of our country
  1. Values
  • Honesty – always telling the truth
  • Respect – treating others well
  • Love – caring for family and friends
  • Peace – living without fighting
  1. Human Rights
  • Right to life and safety
  • Right to education
  • Right to food and shelter
  • Right to play and rest
  1. Democracy
  • Learning to vote and choose leaders
  • Speaking up about what we want
  • Listening to others’ opinions
  • Taking turns to lead
  1. Rule of Law
  • Following rules at home and school
  • Understanding that everyone must obey laws
  • Knowing that laws protect us
  • Respecting authority figures
  1. Good Governance
