Synonyms (Same Meaning Words)

Definition: Words that mean the same or nearly the same

Common Synonym Pairs:

  • big = large, huge, enormous
  • happy = glad, joyful, cheerful
  • fast = quick, rapid, speedy
  • beautiful = pretty, lovely, gorgeous

Antonyms (Opposite Meaning Words)

Definition: Words that have opposite meanings

Common Antonym Pairs:

  • hot ↔ cold
  • big ↔ small
  • happy ↔ sad
  • fast ↔ slow
  • day ↔ night

Comparison

Synonyms: Help avoid repetition, add variety to writing Antonyms: Show contrast, help explain differences
