Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
- Identify the 1st to 7th letters of the English alphabets as musical alphabets (A, B, C, D, E, F, G)
- Read the seven letters of English alphabets
- Draw the treble and bass clef
Introduction
In music, we use the first seven letters of the alphabet to name musical notes. These letters help us read and write music. Today we will learn about musical alphabets and clefs.
Content
Musical Alphabets: The first 7 letters of the English alphabet are used in music: A – B – C – D – E – F – G
These letters repeat over and over: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C, D, E, F, G…
Where Letters Go on the Staff:
- Lines (from bottom to top in Treble Clef): E, G, B, D, F
- Memory trick: “Every Good Boy Does Fine”
- Spaces (from bottom to top in Treble Clef): F, A, C, E
- Memory trick: “FACE”
Types of Clefs:
- Treble Clef (𝄞)
- Looks like a fancy letter G
- Used for high sounds
- Most children sing in treble clef
- Bass Clef (𝄢)
- Looks like a backwards C with two dots
- Used for low sounds
- Men usually sing in bass clef
How to Draw Clefs:
- Treble Clef: Start at the second line, make a circle, then a long line up and down
- Bass Clef: Make a C shape, add two dots on the right
