Topic: Designing Patterns Using Basic Shapes
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
- Explain basic shapes
- Identify and draw basic shapes like triangle, square etc.
- Explain what patterns are
- Demonstrate how to use basic shapes to create patterns
Introduction
Patterns are everywhere! We see them on clothes, buildings, and nature. Today we will learn to make beautiful patterns using basic shapes.
Content
Basic Shapes Review:
- Circle – round shape, no corners

Square – 4 equal sides, 4 corners

Triangle – 3 sides, 3 corners

Rectangle – 4 sides (2 long, 2 short), 4 corners

Oval – like a circle but stretched
What are Patterns? Patterns are:
- Things that repeat in the same way
- Designs that follow a rule
- Arrangements that look organized
- Decorations that make things beautiful
Types of Patterns:
- Repeating patterns – same shape over and over
- Alternating patterns – two shapes taking turns
- Growing patterns – shapes getting bigger or smaller
- Color patterns – same shapes, different colors
How to Make Patterns with Basic Shapes:
- Choose 1 or 2 basic shapes
- Decide how to repeat them
- Keep the same order/rule
- Make it look neat and organized
Examples of Shape Patterns:
- Circle, Circle, Square, Circle, Circle, Square…
- Triangle, Rectangle, Triangle, Rectangle…
- Big circle, small circle, big circle, small circle…
Activity
- Draw a pattern using circles and squares
- Create an alternating pattern with triangles and rectangles
- Make a color pattern using the same shape
- Find patterns in the classroom (on clothes, tiles, books)
