Topic: Colouring – Functional Artworks

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  • Enumerate several functional artworks in/outside the classroom (mat, pot, basket, chair, etc.)
  • Draw at least three functional artworks
  • Apply suitable colours on the objects drawn

Introduction

Welcome to Third Term! Today we will review what we know about functional artworks and practice drawing and coloring them. Functional artworks are beautiful objects that we also use every day.

Content

What are Functional Artworks? Functional artworks are objects that:

  • They are beautiful to look at
  • Have practical uses in our daily life
  • Can be decorated with colors and patterns
  • Combine beauty with usefulness

Examples of Functional Artworks in/outside the Classroom:

  1. Mat – for sitting, wiping feet, decoration

Pot – for cooking, storing water, planting

Basket – for carrying items, storage, decoration

Chair – for sitting, can be beautifully designed

Cup – for drinking, can have nice patterns

Plate – for eating, decorated with designs

Bag – for carrying books, beautifully made

Table – for writing, eating, decorated tops

Picture frame – holds photos, decorated borders

Lamp – gives light, beautiful designs

How to Draw Functional Artworks:

  1. Start with basic shapes – circle for pot, rectangle for table
  2. Add details – handles for cups, legs for chairs
  3. Make it look real – add shadows and textures
  4. Keep proportions right – not too big or small

Suitable Colors for Different Objects:

  • Mat – Brown, green, yellow (natural colors)
  • Pot – Black, brown, red clay colors
  • Basket – Brown, tan, natural woven colors
  • Chair – Brown, black, red, blue (wood or painted colors)
  • Cup – White, blue, red, colorful patterns
  • Plants – Green leaves, colorful flowers

Activity

  1. Look around and identify 5 functional artworks in the classroom
  2. Draw a mat, pot, and basket
  3. Color each drawing with suitable colors
  4. Add patterns to make them more beautiful
