Topic: The Bass Staff

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  • Explain what is bass staff
  • List the uses of bass staff
  • Sing song about assembly e.g. “The day is bright”
  • Draw the bass clef on the staff

Introduction

While the treble staff is for high sounds, the bass staff is for low sounds. Today we will learn about the bass staff and practice drawing the bass clef.

Content

What is Bass Staff? The bass staff is:

  • Five horizontal lines with a bass clef
  • Used for writing low-pitched music
  • Where deep voices and low instruments are written
  • Marked with a bass clef symbol (𝄢)
  • The partner of treble staff in music

Parts of the Bass Staff:

  1. Five Lines – numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 from bottom to top
  2. Four Spaces – between the lines
  3. Bass Clef – the symbol that shows it’s bass staff
  4. Lower pitch – sounds deeper than treble staff

Uses of Bass Staff:

  1. Men’s voices – adult male singers
  2. Low instruments – piano left hand, bass guitar
  3. Deep sounds – drums, low notes
  4. Choir music – for bass and tenor voices
  5. Orchestra music – low-pitched instruments
  6. Piano music – left hand parts
  7. School assembly songs – when men teachers sing
  8. Traditional music – deep drum beats

Notes on Bass Staff:

  • Lines (bottom to top): G, B, D, F, A (“Good Boys Do Fine Always”)
  • Spaces (bottom to top): A, C, E, G (“All Cows Eat Grass”)

Assembly Songs: “The day is bright” is a happy song we sing during school assembly. It helps us start the day with joy and energy.

How to Draw Bass Clef:

  1. Start on the fourth line
  2. Draw a large C shape
  3. Add two dots on the right side
  4. Make sure dots are above and below the line
  5. Keep it neat and clear
