What is Music?

Music is the art of making beautiful sounds that people enjoy listening to.

Simple Definition

Music is organized sounds that create melody, rhythm, and harmony.

Parts of Music

  1. Sound

What we hear with our ears

  • Can be loud or soft
  • Can be high or low
  • Can be long or short
  1. Melody

The tune of a song

  • Goes up and down
  • The part you sing along with
  • Example: “Twinkle, twinkle, little star”
  1. Rhythm

The beat of music

  • Makes you want to clap or dance
  • Can be fast or slow
  • Like your heartbeat: beat-beat-beat
  1. Harmony

Different sounds played together

  • Makes music sound full and rich
  • Like singers singing different parts

How is Music Made?

With Voices

  • Singing songs
  • Humming tunes
  • Making vocal sounds

With Instruments

  • Piano, guitar, drums
  • Flutes, violins, trumpets
  • Traditional Nigerian instruments

With Both

  • Singing while playing instruments
  • Choirs with musical bands
  • School performances

Why Do We Have Music?

  • To make us happy
  • To express feelings
  • To celebrate events
