Topic: First Aid
What is First Aid?
First aid is the immediate help given to someone who is hurt or sick before a doctor arrives.
Basic First Aid for Common Injuries
Cuts and Scrapes:
- Wash your hands first
- Clean the wound with clean water
- Apply pressure with clean cloth to stop bleeding
- Cover with bandage or plaster
- Tell an adult immediately
Nosebleed:
- Sit up straight and lean forward slightly
- Pinch the nose just below the bone
- Hold for 10 minutes without looking
- Breathe through mouth
- Apply ice wrapped in cloth
Burns (minor):
- Cool with cold water for 10-20 minutes
- Do not use ice directly on burn
- Cover gently with clean cloth
- Do not pop blisters
- Get adult help quickly
Bruises:
- Apply ice wrapped in towel
- Elevate the hurt part if possible
- Rest the injured area
- Tell an adult about the injury
Insect Stings:
- Remove stinger if visible (don’t squeeze)
- Wash with soap and water
- Apply cold compress
- Watch for allergic reactions
- Get help if swelling gets worse
First Aid Kit Contents

- Bandages of different sizes
- Antiseptic for cleaning wounds
- Scissors for cutting tape
- Thermometer for checking fever
- Pain relief medicine (for adults to give)
- Emergency phone numbers
When to Get Adult Help
- Heavy bleeding that won’t stop
- Difficulty breathing
- Unconscious person
- Severe pain
- Any head injury
- Burns larger than your palm

- Demonstrate proper sitting position for nosebleed
