Ginar Kalmomi (Building Words)

Starting with Simple Letters

Single Letters: a, i, u, b, d, g, k, m, n

Building Two-Letter Words

  • ba (give)
  • da (with)
  • ga (look/see)
  • ka (you)
  • na (my/I)

Adding Letters to Build Longer Words

From “ba”:

  • ba + ba = baba (father)
  • ba + ki = baki (mouth/black)
  • ba + ya = baya (back/behind)

From “ma”:

  • ma + ma = mama (mother)
  • ma + ki = maki (place)
  • ma + su = masu (those who have)

Word Families

Words starting with “ka”:

  • ka (you)
  • kare (dog)
  • karatu (reading)
  • kasuwa (market)

Words starting with “gi”:

  • gida (house)
  • gindi (bottom)
  • girma (respect)

Exercises

Exercise 1: Build words by adding letters

  1. ba + _____ = baba
  2. ma + _____ = mama
  3. gi + _____ = gida
  4. ka + _____ = kare

Exercise 2: Make new words from these letters

Use: b, a, k, i

  1. ba + ki = _______
  2. ki + ba = _______

Use: g, i, d, a 3. gi + da = _______ 4. da + gi = _______

Exercise 3: Complete the word families

“ka” family:

  1. ka_____ (market)
  2. ka_____ (dog)
  3. ka_____ (reading)

“ma” family:

  1. ma_____ (mother)
  2. ma_____ (place)
  3. ma_____ (school)

Exercise 4: Build 3-letter words

  1. b + a + ki = _______
  2. g + i + da = _______
  3. k + a + re = _______
  4. w + a + sa = _______

Exercise 5: Create your own words

Using these letters: m, a, s, u, k, i, n Build 3 different words:

Class Work

Work in pairs. Take turns building words with letter cards. Your partner guesses the word you’re building.

Homework

Find letters in your name. Use those letters to build 5 new Hausa words. Write them neatly.

Teacher’s Note: Use letter blocks or cards for hands-on word building. Make it like a puzzle game!
