Topic: Plants – As Living Things

What Makes Plants Living Things?

Plants are living things just like animals and humans. They show all the characteristics of life.

Features of Plants

Plants Can Grow:

  • Seeds grow into bigger plants

  • Stems get taller over time

  • Leaves become bigger and more

  • Roots spread deeper into soil

Plants Need Food:

  • Make their own food using sunlight
  • Use chlorophyll (green color) to make food
  • Take in water and minerals from soil through roots
  • Different from animals who eat other things

Plants Can Reproduce:

  • Make new plants like themselves
  • Produce seeds that grow into new plants
  • Some grow from cuttings or bulbs
  • Flowers help make seeds

Plants Respond to Environment:

  • Grow toward sunlight (leaves face the sun)
  • Roots grow toward water in the soil
  • Close flowers at night or in cold weather
  • Bend away from strong wind

Plants Breathe:

  • Take in carbon dioxide from air
  • Give out oxygen that we breathe
  • This happens through tiny holes in leaves called stomata

Plants Can Die:

  • When they get too old
  • Without enough water, sunlight, or good soil
  • When attacked by diseases or insects
  • During very cold or hot weather
