Topic: Money

Learning Objectives

By the end of this week, pupils should be able to:

  • Count and identify numbers from 450-470 and order numbers 1-470
  • Skip count in 2s, 3s, 5s, and 10s
  • Write numbers 450-470 in numerals and words
  • Discuss money and its importance
  • Recognize all types of Nigerian money (coins and bank notes)
  • Convert naira to kobo and kobo to naira
  • Change money up to ₦100 into smaller units
  • Shop with money not greater than ₦100 in real-life situations
  • Solve real-life problems involving money

 

Lesson Content

Day 1: Number Work Revision (450-470)

New Number Range:

  • Count from 450-470: 450, 451, 452, 453… 470
  • Order numbers from 1-470
  • Write numbers in numerals and words
  • Examples: 456 = four hundred and fifty-six

Skip Counting Review:

  • 2s: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20…
  • 3s: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30…
  • 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50…
  • 10s: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100…

Day 2: Introduction to Money

What is Money? Money is what we use to buy things we need and want.

Importance of Money:

  • Buy food, clothes, and school supplies
  • Pay for services (transport, school fees)
  • Save for future needs
  • Help family and others

Types of Money:

  • Coins: Hard, metal money
  • Notes: Paper money

Day 3: Nigerian Money – Coins and Notes

Nigerian Coins:

  • 50 kobo (₦0.50)
  • ₦1 (1 naira)
  • ₦2 (2 naira)

Nigerian Notes:

  • ₦5 (five naira) – green
  • ₦10 (ten naira) – brown/purple
  • ₦20 (twenty naira) – brown
  • ₦50 (fifty naira) – blue
  • ₦100 (one hundred naira) – green
  • ₦200, ₦500, ₦1000 (higher denominations)

Money Symbols:

  • Naira = ₦
  • Kobo = k

Day 4: Money Conversion and Change

Naira to Kobo Conversion:

  • 1 naira = 100 kobo
  • ₦1 = 100k
  • ₦2 = 200k
  • ₦5 = 500k
  • ₦10 = 1000k

Kobo to Naira Conversion:

  • 100k = ₦1
  • 200k = ₦2
  • 50k = ₦0.50

Making Change: When you pay more than the cost of an item, you get change. Example: Item costs ₦30, you pay ₦50 Change = ₦50 – ₦30 = ₦20

Day 5: Shopping Practice

Real Shopping Scenarios: Practice buying items with money up to ₦100

Examples:

  • Pencil = ₦10, Book = ₦25, Total = ₦35
  • Bread = ₦50, Milk = ₦30, Total = ₦80
  • Sweet = ₦5, Biscuit = ₦15, Total = ₦20

  • 461 = four hundred and sixty-one
  • 455 = four hundred and fifty-five
  • Order: 452, 467, 459, 463 → 452, 459, 463, 467

Money Examples:

Conversion Examples:

  • ₦3 = 300k
  • 250k = ₦2.50
  • ₦7 = 700k

Shopping Examples: “Kemi bought a pencil for ₦15 and an eraser for ₦10. She paid with ₦50. How much change did she receive?”

  • Total cost = ₦15 + ₦10 = ₦25
  • Change = ₦50 – ₦25 = ₦25
