What is Basketball? Basketball is a game played by two teams who try to score points by putting a ball through the opponent’s basket. The team with the most points wins. Basketball teaches us to work together, stay active, and have fun.
Equipment Needed:
- Basketball (round, orange ball with curved lines)
- Basketball court or open space
- Two baskets or targets to aim at
- Comfortable sports clothes and shoes
Basic Skills in Basketball:
- Dribbling (Bouncing the Ball) What it is: Bouncing the ball repeatedly with one hand while moving or standing still.

How to dribble:
- Hold the ball with both hands at chest level
- Use your fingertips and palm of one hand to push the ball down
- Let the ball bounce back up to your hand
- Keep pushing it down in a steady rhythm
- Use your stronger hand first, then practice with the weaker hand
- Keep your eyes looking forward, not at the ball
- Bend your knees slightly for better control
Why it’s important: Dribbling allows you to move around the court with the ball without carrying it, which is against the rules.
- Passing (Giving the Ball to Teammates) What it is: Throwing or pushing the ball to another player on your team.
Types of passes:
- Chest Pass: Hold ball at chest, push with both hands straight to teammate
- Bounce Pass: Push ball to bounce once on ground before reaching teammate
- Overhead Pass: Hold ball above head, throw to teammate
How to pass properly:
- Look at the person you want to pass to
- Use both hands for better control
- Step forward as you pass
- Aim for your teammate’s chest area
- Don’t throw too hard or too soft
Why it’s important: Passing helps your team work together and move the ball toward the basket to score.
- Catching (Receiving the Ball) What it is: Safely receiving the ball when someone passes it to you.
How to catch:
- Watch the ball coming toward you
- Hold your hands out with fingers spread
- Use both hands to grab the ball
- Pull the ball toward your chest for security
- Be ready to dribble, pass, or shoot after catching
Why it’s important: Good catching prevents the ball from being lost to the other team.
- Shooting (Scoring Points) What it is: Throwing the ball toward the basket to score points.

Basic shooting technique:
- Hold the ball with both hands
- Aim for the basket or target
- Bend your knees slightly
- Push the ball up and forward with your hands
- Follow through by extending your arms toward the target
- Practice shooting from close distances first
Why it’s important: Shooting is how teams score points and win games.
- Basic Movement and Positioning What it is: Moving around the court effectively during the game.
Key movements:
- Running while maintaining good posture
