Topic: First Aid (Continued)

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  • Practice more first aid skills
  • Know how to help someone who is choking
  • Remember emergency phone numbers

Introduction:

Last time we learned about first aid for cuts and bruises. Today we will learn about helping someone who cannot breathe properly and other important first aid skills.

Lesson Content:

Review of Previous First Aid:

  • First aid is first help for injured people
  • Always get adult help
  • Keep hands and materials clean
  • Stay calm and be gentle

NEW FIRST AID SKILLS:

  1. CHOKING (Something stuck in throat):

Signs someone is choking:

  • Cannot speak or cough
  • Holding their throat with hands
  • Face turns red or blue
  • Making strange sounds

What to do:

  • Call for adult help immediately
  • If they can still cough, let them cough
  • Do not hit their back yourself
  • Stay with them until adult comes
  • Do not try to remove object from mouth
  1. SOMEONE FEELING FAINT:

Signs:

  • Feeling dizzy or weak
  • Face looks pale
  • Says they feel sick

What to do:

  • Help them sit down slowly
  • Get them to put head between knees
  • Give them fresh air
  • Call an adult
  • Stay with them
  1. BEE STING:

What to do:

  • Tell adult immediately
  • Do not try to remove stinger yourself
  • Put ice wrapped in cloth on sting
  • Watch for swelling or difficulty breathing
  • Some people are very allergic to bee stings
  1. STOMACH ACHE:

What to do:

  • Help person sit or lie down comfortably
  • Tell them to breathe slowly
  • Do not give any medicine
  • Get adult help
  • If severe, call for emergency help

Emergency Phone Numbers to Remember:

  • Your home phone number
  • Your parents’ mobile numbers
  • Emergency services (ask teacher for local number)
  • School’s main office number

Information to Give When Calling for Help:

  • Your name
  • Where you are (school, home address)
  • What happened
  • How many people are hurt
  • Stay on phone until they tell you to hang up

First Aid Golden Rules:

  1. Safety First: Make sure area is safe
  2. Get Help: Always call adults
  3. Stay Calm: Do not panic
  4. Be Gentle: Do not cause more harm
  5. Stay With Person: Do not leave them alone
  6. Know Your Limits: Only do what you have learned

Class Activity:

Practice emergency scenarios with teacher guidance:

  • How to call for help
  • What information to give
  • How to comfort someone who is hurt

Practical Exercise:

Emergency Practice:

  • Practice saying your full name clearly
  • Practice giving your home address
  • Practice staying calm in pretend emergency
  • Practice comforting a classmate (role play)

Assignment:

Learn your home phone number and one parent’s mobile number by heart. Ask your parents to show you how to make an emergency call from your home phone.
